In June, 2008 a man killed his supervisor and four employees after arguing with his supervisor over wearing headphones and not using his safety glasses at a plastic plant. He then killed his self. This is an example of workplace violence.
The definition of workplace violence is violence or the threat of physical violence against workers.

The occupations and jobs most at risk are the ones that exchange money with the public, people who work alone or in small groups, people who work in high crime areas. People who work directly with the public are also at high risk for workplace violence.

Try to avoid traveling alone and carry minimal cash while on the job. Take advantage of the policy and procedures of your workplace by being knowledgeable of them. Use cell phones and hand held alarms and also the buddy system to help protect yourself while traveling on the job.

Be aware of some of the signs that workplace violence is brewing. Being pro-active can help prevent you or someone else from being a victim of workplace violence. Threats of intimidation, frequent angry outbursts, paranoia, stress, extreme mood swings etc… are signs that a co-worker may be about to explode in a fit of rage. Report to your supervisor if you notice things that are signs of violent behavior.

If you can catch the warning signs and communicate your concern to the proper authority you can potentially prevent violence from erupting into an attack. Give the aggressor some space this is good for you and him/her. Avoid physical contact if able and speak to them in a calm voice; reiterate what they say in some cases to if you are not sure what they are asking/demanding. Document the incident and report it to your supervisor.

If a violent event occurs in your workplace you ultimately have three options. Pick the one that can best help protect you. Run, hid or fight!!!

Seek counseling and therapy if you are still thinking about or effected by workplace violence.
