When a teenager engages in a pattern of abuse against a boyfriend or girlfriend, so as to intimidate, control or physically hurt the person.
Emotional, physical and sexual abuse are types of dating violence. When a person set’s out to cause shame or lower a person’s self- esteem etc. that is a sign of emotional abuse. When a person inflict physical pain or injury on their selves or someone else that is a sign of physical abuse. If a person makes contact, unwanted comments or advances on someone else that could be seen as sexual abuse.
Dating violence can happen to anyone no matter their social status or sexual preferences. Females are more vulnerable than males. Perpetrators sometimes exhibit low self-esteem, anger, uncontrollable emotions, unable to problem solve etc..
So why does the victim chooses to stay in a violent relationship? Maybe, they have simply adapted to being abused. Some may think they can change their abuser. Some stay out of fear, guilt, love or greed. Manipulation may also make a person stay in an abusive relationship. Victims may also stay because they are being blackmailed.
Male perpetrators have sometimes been abused or neglected at a younger age. They may also have witness someone being abused. Drugs and alcohol can also play a role in dating violence. Socializing with people who share a sexist attitude also propels the acceptance of dating violence.
The victim of dating violence may need help if it becomes noticeable to the witnesses. Most victims of dating violence never share the incident with anyone. When a victim can find no one to turn to and the situation continues to get worse they may turn to drugs or alcohol. Some may become pregnant at a young age, commit or think about committing suicide and isolate their self from their peers.
