A Big Hello to all WOO Fans! 🥳🥳🥳 WOO!
I think I may have finally worked out why WOO is quiet this weekend. It has nothing to do with a lack of things happening. It is because everyone is probably too busy wondering who their next Ranked opponent is going to be.
I have gotten some feedback that reminders are pretty useful when it comes to the regular events held in WOO. So here I am again with a quick reminder for any upcoming events.
The new Async Ranked system has introduced something that I think could create plenty of entertainment all by itself, the Mystery Opponent. When a player becomes the Challenger, they are not allowed to browse through a list of opponents and pick somebody who looks beatable. They are not shown the other player's name or roster. They simply get the oldest eligible Ranked Show waiting in the system and have to build their team without knowing what is waiting for them.
That sounds like exactly the sort of thing that could keep WOO players occupied for a weekend.
Imagine creating your Ranked Show, locking your cards and then walking away. Somewhere out there, another WOO player could eventually press Play Ranked and receive your Show. You have no idea who they are, what lineup they are building or what strategy they are going to use. They have no idea who you are or what you have submitted.
That is a pretty decent little wrestling mystery without WOO needing to organise a special weekend event around it.
The Promoter has already committed their team before knowing who the Challenger will be. The Challenger then receives the same match budget but has to build their lineup without being able to scout the Promoter first. Only once both sides have committed their teams is the matchup revealed.
Personally, I think that is enough to make a quiet weekend rather interesting. There is always going to be that question sitting in the back of your mind. Who is behind that Show? What did they build? Did they make a clever lineup? Did they spend their budget differently? Did they build something completely unexpected?
And perhaps that is why WOO does not need to make a huge amount of noise this weekend. The new Ranked system has created its own little suspense machine.
There is also the FIFO matchmaking system, which means players cannot simply shop around for the opponent they want. The oldest eligible Show gets picked first. That makes the whole thing feel a little more like walking into a wrestling arena and discovering who has been booked for the match, rather than scrolling through a list until you find someone you fancy fighting.
So if anyone asks why WOO has no big weekend activity, I have a perfectly good explanation ready. Everyone is too busy wondering who the Mystery Opponent is.
Maybe WOO is quiet because the real conversation is happening inside Ranked. Players are building Shows, accepting challenges, trying new lineups and waiting for that moment when both sides finally get revealed.
Sometimes you do not need fireworks, tournaments and giant announcements. Sometimes all you need is a question mark sitting on the other side of the ring.
TLDR: This is a reminder to all my readers (and WOO fans) that baring any last minute sudden surprise events, this weekend should be a relatively quiet one. 😜
