Fourteen and a half years. That’s how long I’ve had my shop for this far, and in all the years I’ve been here…with all of the comic book collections I’ve purchased…we’ve never had this book walk through our door. Until now…
I’m talking about Alf #48. Your eyes are not deceiving you at all. I’m excited for Alf today, and I’ll try to explain why. This book was released almost 31 years ago to the day. I was just a squeaky voiced 11 year old booger picker at the time, and paid this book no attention as I was too busy collecting whatever the prism/holofoil/glow/die-cut/chromium gimmick of the week was.
Fast forward years later, and a legit comic cult following has ensued regarding Alf #48. I’ll preface this by saying that nobody gives a shit about the other 49 issues of Alf that exist. Oh yeah, this series went on for years to reach 50 issues!!! 50!!!!!!! That’s nuts and shows just how nutty comic collecting was on the 90’s. Most series that launch today get axed before issue 10…but Alf got to 50!
Anywho…this book has become a sought after gem amongst all 13 Alf fans worldwide, but more importantly by hungry avid comic collectors who just want that “rare” issue. Reason being is…well…just look at the fucking cover.
Alf is basically raping a seal front and center on a 90’s Marvel comic. I’m still baffled that this actually made it through all the checks to get published like this. Do the the risqué cover, this book has become a ghost. Copies are out there on eBay of course, but it’ll set ya back a pretty penny. Depending on condition, copies can be just below $100 to upwards of over $500 for a high grade slab!!!
Lionsgate also released a 2nd print years later in an unnamed manor. I’ve tried to dig up info on how the 2nd print was distributed to no avail. You’ll be able to instantly tell the difference between the original release and the second print by looking at the top left box. Those also fetch some solid coin as well.
If you are wondering how this rapey beauty came to be in our possession, here’s the skinny. I was super slammed and a gentleman popped in with a shoebox of comics that he found while doing a house cleanout. I didn’t have the time to really dig in as I had a full shop, but I did see a handful of Alf comics were visible. I played the lotto and offered him $10 bucks sight unseen. I figured the worst that would come of it would be me dumping these 50 plus books in my dollar bins. He was happy with that as he said he’d put it in his gas tank abd it was free money. All in all, from the time he entered to the time he left, it couldn’t have been more than 90 seconds. After the hoopla died down, I cracked the box open and a few copies down…boom!!!
This copy is in pretty nice shape. It’s going some spine tics, but some other flaws that my press will fix up nicely. I’ll have this pressed and on our fancy comic wall that houses over 800 wall books just in time for our big Black Friday Weekend Sale!!! Betting this will be gone by the end of that weekend. Unless the press REALLY cleans it up nice. If that’s the case, off to CGC it goes. Either way, I’m glad to finally get my hands on a copy of this seal fucker…not just for the few hundred it could bring…but for the story.
Thanks for reading along folks and always remember to get consent when making sexy time with wildlife.
