Smell that?!? That’s the fresh scent of a happy buyer going home with a new grail from my shop. Instagram user Pastramowitz_pops stopped by my shop Conquest Comics the other day for the first time, and we were sure to put a hurting on his wallet.
We sat and discussed the Funko market, what he collects, and I shared some killer stories on our past exclusives & acquisitions from past Funko Fundays. Man…we had our share of successes at those events that include scoring the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket 2 Pack, Clown Dumbo, and many of the exclusive Freddy Funko mashup’s such as the one this gent was sent home with…Freddy Funko Charlie Brown.
For those of you who aren’t into the Funko scene, I’ll dish a little background info on these. Freddy Funko is the company mascot and for as long as I can remember, they have been mashing him up with popular icons throughout pop culture to create fun promotional pieces. Usually they are very limited, highly collectible, and can cost an arm and a leg.
Freddy Joker, Freddy Pennywise, Freddy Jack Skellington, Freddy Spidey…the list can go on and on…but we will pump the brakes here with Freddy Charlie Brown. Funko actually released 3 versions of Freddy Charlie, way back in 2016. One in a yellow shirt that was limited to 500 pieces, and the other more coveted red & orange shirt versions, both limited to an incredibly low 24 total in the world!!!
That was the one I was lucky enough to pull a Red in my Box of Fun that year. The Box of Fun is a box that each attendee of Fundays receives that is filled with 3 newly released random Freddy Funko Pops. Sometimes they are turds…but once in a while you get lucky and pull a gem. Case in point…a 1/24 piece.
We’ve had this bad boy in the case for over 5 years now, so I can’t wait for all the slackers who delayed on it in that time to give me a line similar but not limited to, “ohhhhh, I was gonna buy that!” Always happens in situations like this. Either way, it’s found it’s new home with this five chap who was super excited to land it.
His “over the moon” excitement was awesome to see as he added this rare unicorn of a Pop to his ever growing collection. It’s now his rarest and lost expensive piece which is badass to hear. Most Pop folks don’t have a 1/24 piece…so this puts him in a different category of collector…the hardcore!
Now let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of this transaction. I’m not going to lie…he spent a nice chunk of change on it. It’s always hard to pin point a true and accurate value on these ultra limited pieces. The past sales data is terrible to go by and they just don’t show up often, and one bad or good sale can swing the purchasing pendulum in either direction. Here’s how it went down…
We had it priced in our case for a delicious $3000. We based that off of other 1/24’s data, but it’s a far cry to the lowly $880 value that the heavily utilized by collectors, Pop Price Guide gives it. We knew that was nonsense and stuck to our guns on it as we strayed from the value given there.
After contemplating for a bit, He offered $2000. There were some back and forth negotiations, and we settled at $2300 for this piece along with a few hundred he spent on some other merch. Not too shabby for a freebie I received!
If we look at recent sales data, I was surprised to see a seller sold one in January for $1000 buy it now, which to me seems incredibly short sighted as they left a ton of moolah on the table.
Currently there are only 2 available for sale with a ball hair under $5000 being the most affordable, and one that includes the other 2 Freddy Charlie’s for a whopping and very hopeful, $45k. Madness!!!!
I’d love to say that he’s a crazy fella who just wasted $2300 on a hunk on vinyl, but I’ve been down this road before. Selling rare grail pieces just to see them rocket to new insane highs the following years. Also, I collect my fair share of crap that people ridicule me for as well…so…
