Last year, I commissioned a piece from a fantastic comic book artist by the name of Khoi Pham. Khoi has worked on a ton of books and is a popular artist on some of the comic art groups I am a member of.
The piece I commissioned is of...big surprise...Mysterio!!! I paid extra for the piece to be “cover quality” and to contain a badass background of his choosing. To Khoi...I say...
He decided NOT on some smoke and mirrors...NOT on some dingy alleyway...but instead...the other 5 members of The Sinister Six!!! I’m totally game!
Khoi sent me this image in the fall and told me he was just going to finish up the paints on it. He has been promising “next week” for half a year now. That was up until he stopped answering me completely in January.
It’s a tremendous shame as I love his work and he seemed like a really good dude. Up until he started dodging me completely. I have no doubt that I’ll get the commission that I paid in full for almost a year ago, but at what additional cost?!?
I feel like the experience has left a shitty taste in my mouth, and has really put a damper on my excitement for receiving it. Nothing shows respect for your fans like taking their money then completely ghosting them.
Sad part is that Khoi and I discussed the possibility of utilizing his work for an exclusive variant for my shop. We threw around the idea of him coming to the shop for a signing and all of that. Then...radio silence.
We did hear from a “friend” on an art collectors Facebook group that he is aware of the issues and promised once again to have it done along with some others he owes, at the end of March. We are 4 days out from that and he has yet to even ask for my address so I’m certain that the gazillionth self imposed deadline will be met with disappointment again.
I guess I’ll just have to wait for the piece...losing more interest and respect for Khoi by the day.
(Sigh...first world problems)
