Yup. This is another one of those “Love at First Sight” instances. This time regarding a lovely oversized piece of Spidey art by one of the Modern Masters in Frank Cho. So folks…I present to you the beautiful Original Art to the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #663!!!
What a beauty…right?!? I’ll take this moment to tell ya a bit about this issue. Published June 1st of 2011, issue #663 featured a beautiful cover by Frank Cho with a creative team of Dan Slott on writing duties and Giuseppe Camuncoli on pencils.
This issue follows Spidey as he gets mixed up with Anti-Venom and Wraith (Jean Dewolf). I really love this cover as I totally dig Anti-Venom’s huge presence looming over Spidey. The detail in the smoke and the deep blacks on this just scream for your attention. It’s also oversized as you’ll see below. Most of the time, comic artist work on boards or pages that are 11x17. This tall drink of water stands at 14x21 wgich is just gigantic. I love it and am humbled to have this now added to the ever growing Spidey gallery. Here’s the published cover for reference.
Earlier this year, Mr Glen Brunswick from Panel Page Art popped up this gorgeous piece on his site. After a bit of back and forth, we agreed upon a price and the countdown began as I paid this piece off over the course of 6 long and grueling months. Glen…thanks brother. Really appreciate it.
I ended up paying off the last payment in person at the NYCC as I visited with the wife for the one day. This worked out perfectly as I was able to run downstairs to Artist Alley where Frank was set up.
Figured it would be cool to get a pic of him reunited with his creation from years earlier and he was more than happy to participate. He ended up telling me that he sold it around 2 years ago and that it was his favorite Spidey related piece he’d worked on…which is pretty badass to hear after paying it off over the better part of a year. Also, he was surprised to see that the gentleman he initially sold it to, had gotten rid of it so quickly. Don’t worry Frank…it’s dying with me.
So now I have to wait to get this deliciousness all framed up. I wanted to get it done this weekend as my framers was holding their Black Friday sale, but I couldn’t find the time. Sadly this will sit in a portfolio for a few months until the next framing event. That one is going to mess me up in the ol’ wallet as I have several gems waiting to be reborn into my framed Spidey gallery.
