Ancient African Dancing Competition
Once upon a time in an ancient African community, there was a dancing competition involving all maidens in the land.The prince was supposed to pick the best dancer as his wife from among the maidens. After about 75 years, the king's family faced serious conflicts due to the biological inheritance of dancing steps within the family.The story goes as follows:
Omumu said to Ugwuola [Golden buttock], "Remember the dancing competition that will be held in the next 4 market times?" Ugwuola replied, "Yes, my mother, I know. Aunt Urenma has been coaching me." Omumu continued, "Remember, our secret has been the shaking and coiling of our buttocks, and the master secret is the magical movements of our legs." Omumu smiled, reminiscing about her exploits in all the dancing competitions she had participated in the neighboring kingdom where she came from before marrying Ugwuola's father.
She then danced before her daughter, displaying all her dancing styles, and said, "My daughter, always remember the magical movements of legs, which only our family members know how to display in all the dancing competitions we have had." Ugwuola was impressed by her mother's vigor and flexibility, while Uluokwu, their father, watched the scene through the window, remembering when his wife used to dance with friends and his fellow hunter friend, who happened to be Omumu's cousin. It was her dancing style that made him marry her.
The day of the dancing competition arrived, and all the maidens who would participate appeared in dancing mode, looking beautiful. They tied pieces of cloth around their breasts and wore short animal skins to cover themselves between the waist and knees.
As soon as the flute men and drummers began to play, the maidens lined up in seven rows, waiting for the arrival of the king and the prince. They would begin as soon as the king and prince sat down, and the fresh and unmixed palm wine was placed before them by the king's palm wine taper. The palm wine would be served by the best dancer.
The king and the prince arrived in their kingly and princely regalia, respectively, escorted by guards and accompanied by the palace men [the nze]. As soon as they sat down, and the palm wine was hung on a standing wooden stick, the dance began. The maidens danced in four groups, one group after the other. The dancers were energetic and gifted; in fact, the prince had difficulty making a choice until he spotted Ugwuola among the seventh group.
It was evident to everybody that Ugwuola danced as if there was a rhythmic electric current wonderfully going around her body but magically controlling the movements of her legs. Ugwuola awestruck the king, the prince, all the viewers, and her fellow maidens. When the prince came and touched Ugwuola, the queen came and placed the royal diadem on Ugwuola's head.
As time passed, the prince discovered that all his children had the same magical dancing steps. Consequently, it became a norm in the prince's family to identify his descendants by their magically dancing steps.
However, chaos arose when, after many years, some descendants of Ugwuola, the great dancer, and the prince could not perform the magical steps. This brought a dichotomy between the magical dancers and non-magical dancers and affected who would ascend to the throne, leading to acrimony among themselves.
Eventually, the elders of the land settled the chaos following the tradition of the land. They directed the town crier to summon all the villagers to the palace. When they all gathered, the most elderly among them spoke, "My people, you are all welcome. You all know the chaos the king's family has, and we, the kingdom of Ndiegwu, cannot stand to see the children of our kings perish in this war. So we have a tradition, but we do not support adultery. The tradition states that every son born in a man's family by his wife traditionally becomes a bonafide member of the family." This settled the chaos and reintegrated the king's family.
Finally, a non-magical dancer became the king of the land of Ndiegwu.
