This reminds me of a reddit post I read. The man was with a woman who was a complete narcissist. She ran off to someone who had more money. He was broken hearted, and his kids were angry as hell at their mother for running off.
A few years later, he got in a really good position at his workplace, both of his kids had graduated school and were heading to good universities, because they worked HARD and got excellent grades so they could earn scholarships, and things were going really well.
His, now ex, wife returned and demanded he take her back because the guy she ditched him for had, apparently, lost his job and got a much lower-paying one, and he, and his kids, basically told her no. She didn't take it well.
And he pretty much said the same thing as in this post. "With you, I had everything, and I wasn't happy. Without you, I have my children, my job, and my life, and we're happy."
