I got my first bits of bitcoin at the very end of 2013. Like most people, I heard about it in passing, the bounced onto the next distraction. At the time, I was doing construction, feeling like I was killing myself, playing the pawn in someone else's chess game.
I was ready to do anything that minimized time and maximized profit. I guess the one good thing about doing grunt work is having spare brain cells. Mindless tasks lend well to thought voyages. Most of the time I'm thinking,
"How can I get in early on the next best thing?"
I went to the library and started browsing threw some books about investing. Out of the unrealistic stack of 20 library borrowed books, I jumped from stocks to currency exchange or forex. I didn't have any more cash than I could afford to loose. On the other hand, I'm a bit of a degenerate gambler and risk is a drug, so I read read on.
To make a this long hot dog a little easier to digest, I'll keep it short...
Essentially, reading about forex got me into bitcoin. I had to watch How Bitcoin Works Under the Hood about 10x. The rabbit hole is deep and forever getting deeper. I began to see bitcoin of less of an investment vehicle and more of a tool change. The socioeconomic and technological implications alone make it pretty damn interesting.
However, the thing I learned that sucks, it's really hard to talk to people about bitcoin. Most are only half listening in the first place. They are always going to doubt. But haters gonna hate, laters gonna be late, so with or without their attention or interest, I knew I had to take the dive.
Luckily I went with Coinbase, because MtGox was still an option at the time. They went belly up about a week after I finally had some bits. The roller coaster aint stopping anytime soon, especially if you are always checking the price. So nowadays, I stick to learning as much as possible about cryptocurrency in general.
So how did you get your first bits?
Did you use an exchange?
Got any tips to explaining bitcoin for the first time?
