Local Currency ?

Not long ago I went to a cottage with the kids for a few days, while there I went to get some things from a store and I saw this sign I thought it was pretty neat, and I never seen anything like that or even realized something like this could be legal but I guess it is, the government is fine with it as long as some regulations are followed and they want they tax cut as well.

This is pretty neat and it got me thinking about the possibilities for something, Gold backs are neat but pretty high premium on them bad boys, don't get we wrong I still think they are pretty cool but I am thinking of something cooler but not sure how that all plays out legally when precious metals become part of the equation.

Anyway this is about it for this one, what are your thoughts on this type of thing, is there potential for a peoples currency ?
