CHipping Sparrow Spizella passerina
The Spizella genus of sparrows in North America are among the challenging identification issues for birders, but in the spring, when we don't have to consider juveniles, and in Western Washington, where Chipping Sparrow is the only likely Spizella Sparrow, it is really pretty easy.
I loved seeing this first-of-the-year Chipping Sparrow yesterday.

Adult Chipping Sparrows have a bright reddish cap, a bold black eye-line, and a clean white eyebrow stripe, along with unstreaked underparts, a reddish shoulder and wing areas, and sing a very long rapid trill, making it pretty easy to identify them, especially when they perch and allow close views like this singing bird.
