Lincoln's Sparrow Melospiza lincolnii is a sparrow we seen commonly in winter in the Puget Sound area, but need to go to the mountains to see them in their breeding habitat.
Today I went with Bruce Labar to the Naches Pass Horse Camp Trailhead and hiked to Government Meadow. Our hope was to find either or both of the three-toed woodpecker species, and ite was tough going on that regard. Near the end of the hike we managed to hear an American Three-toed Woodpecker Picoides dorsalis calling and I got just a glimpse of the woodpecker flying to a snag nearby, but we could never get decent looks. No luck at all on Black-backed Woodpecker Picoides arcticus or even the more common Red-breasted Sapsucker Sphyrapicus ruber.
Another shot of the Lincoln's Sparrow.
We did mange a nice hike, with great views of Government Meadow, where we figured out our way around, after getting temporarily lost? last year on a hike here. A Roosevelt Elk Cervus canadensis roosevelti was seen across one of the smaller adjacent meadows.
Overall a nice hike, but fairly slow birding.
Good birding. Steem on!
