Hi there!
From which generation are you from? Have you seen an actual Nokia 5110 mobile phone? Or have you owned or wished for one during your younger years? By just answering these questions, I can actually tell your age. Hahahhaa!
Anyway, I just want to share a story about my husband's vintage 5110 phone. He is so proud of owning this decades old stuff despite of people's mixed reaction upon seeing him holding one. To be honest about it, he has two smart phones. Despite the fact that he already owns somewhat high end gadgets, the Nokia 5110 is still being used on a daily basis: this serves as his extra phone to call landlines.
The Nokia phone was a big hit in the Philippines when it is launched in the year 1998. It was the favorite phone of many people until 2001. According to my husband, he had one when he was in high school, the time when the phone was launched. So, owning one once again in his 30's is such a journey to the memory lane for him.
The Nokia 5110 he's using is a refurbished item he bought online. Surprisingly, despite its old age and reconditioned state, he still paid around 3,000 pesos ($60). When asked why buy such an old phone, he simply replied that there's a different level of satisfaction in owning a vintage item that still works and serves its purpose.
Having a 5110 is quite a different experience for him. The funny thing is, even he'll just put it on the table unattended, no one will ever dare to steal it (so far, so good). He had this one time when we rushed our daughter to the hospital at dawn. Because he's so anxious, he accidentaly dropped the phone on the parking lot without noticing it. After more than 5 hours, he realized that his phone is nowhere to be found in our hospital room. When he checked his car, he saw the phone lying safely on the grassy part of the parking space. The sun was so up and there's so many cars parked beside his - still no one dared to get it. Amazing!
***The hardest part of owning a vintage phone is the unavailability of its accessories and parts. Also, even some of the mobile shop attendants don't even know that the phone existed! As if the phone comes from the dinosaur era! Even our daughter, for instance, calls it a walkie talkie.***
With my husband still attached to this piece of vintage gadget, I learned something: new stuff, latest models, and all expensive things do not automatically mean happiness. There are still simple joys in life that require no coping up with the face-paced and ever changing world. Also, truth be told: old things and people are still gold. Nothing compares.
