Beauty is a thing that so many people are concerned around right now, you know keeping in shape and properly being able to add shape in the right places, has remained a major concern to so many people, going into the gym and doing intense exercise is what a lot of people either do not have the time for, or do not have the strength to carry out, the most common solution/option so many people run to is- LIPOSUCTION.
Liposuction, is a surgical procedure, it is a procedure that involves fat subtraction from different parts of the body where the body owner feels they are not needed, like the abdomen, upper arms, neck, thighs, chest and then placed in desired areas like the buttocks and the hips (really common). Other common names for liposuction are; body contouring, lipo and lipoplasty. A suction technique is used for fat removal from the undesired areas.

Improvement has been made in the medical field over the years, and the introduction of super-wet techniques, tumescent technique, ultrasonic assisted liposuction, and laser lipolysis into liposuction procedure has made it possible for the removal of larger volumes of fat with lower loss of blood and lesser complications. When, diet and exercise fail to do the job, liposuction is the most sought after option.
Large volume liposuction (LVL), is the removal of a large percentage of fat during the surgical procedure, most of the problem associated with large volume liposuction are linked to fluid shifts and fluid balance, before a surgery is categorized as large volume based, it is calculated based on the total volume of fat taken from patient, which includes the fat, the blood as well as the wetting solution. Describing it in a clinical term, large volume liposuction is the removal of over 5 liters of the total volume of fat found in the body of patients.
Obesity is caused in the body through an increase in the amount of fat content in the body, this fat content could be hyperplastic or hypertrophic. The most common part of adipose tissue contains white fat, the white fat is responsible for the storage of triglycerides and fatty acids required for the energy demands of the body.
The history of excessive fat eliminations dates back to as far as 1921, when Charles Dujarrier attempted to take out subcutaneous fat from the knees and calves of a ballerina, the incident which occurred in France using a femoral artery. The operation was not successful as the dancer's leg got amputated from the unintentional damage that was done to the femoral artery. This unfortunate incident prevented further occurrence of the procedure, in 1974, however, there was a developed tool and improved technique to carry out modern liposuction. This was done by Giorgio Fischer and Arpad Fischer, who are both gynecologists who are from Rome and Italy respectively. They created their own tools, as well as their own cannulae, they went further to develop a technique of crossing tunnel creation.
Is Liposuction safe for everyone?
Prior to a liposuction procedure, the patients involved needs to understand the process as well as the risk involved. Medical experts would also go through the medical history of the patient, paying close attention to the pulmonary and cardiovascular evaluation. While certain body types are good for liposuction procedure, some others should completely avoid doing it. If you must go through the process of liposuction, this means you must;
- Have a firm, elastic skin.
- Weight range of 30%.
- Do not have so much excessive skin.
- Must not be obese or overweight.
- Have a good physical shape.
- You should not smoke.
- You need to have a good muscle tone.
Relatively, if you need to get liposuction, you must not do or have any of these things; - Do not smoke.
- Do not get overweight.
- Ensure you do not have any chronic condition.
- Make sure you do not have excessive/saggy skin.
- Ensure you are not taking a medication that stands a risk of bleeding, medications that contributes to blood thinning process.
During weight gain, fat cells increases in volume and size, the method of liposuction works by reducing the amount of fat cell in area desired by the patient. We must however understand that, we cannot live without fat cells because these fat cells poise great benefits to our bodies, however when things get excessive, it begins to create health problems. After liposuction, the skin gets the form of the new contour of the treated area, this means there has to be a good skin tone, in order to have a better result and a more smooth skin. If the skin is however, loose and thin, you will have a loose skin after the procedure is done.
Liposuction comes in different forms, there are four different types of liposuction;
Tumescent Liposuction: This type of liposuction is the most common form that exists, in this case the surgeon injects a solution containing salt and water unto the patients, this injection aids the removal of fat. Anesthetic injection is as well given to help relieve pain, in this process as well, epinephrine is also given, in order to reduce blood loss since epinephrine is responsible for the constriction in reducing blood loss. The prepared solution is injected directly unto the area that is being treated, causing stiffness of the swelling. Small cuts are done on the skin, this is for cannula insertion that vacuums solution together with fat cells from the body. Later on, the IV fluid is used for the sake of replenishing the body fluids.
Power-assisted Liposuction: In this case of liposuction, the surgeon makes use of special cannula, this special cannula uses tiny rapid vibrations and moves back in a back and forth motion rapidly, for the purpose of breaking down fat cells, so they could be gotten out of the body in suction.
This procedure has a higher advantage because it has smaller incisions, the smaller incisions created, targets the specified area without damaging the tissues surrounding the place, it also provides the surgeon with more room for fat removal with lower level of swelling and pain. This method of liposuction is often recommended for those who wish to take out a large volume of fat or if there has been a previous liposuction procedure.
Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction: This method is often combined with traditional liposuction. This method involves a surgeon making use of an ultrasound wave to liquify fat cells in targeted areas of the body, the liquified fat cells are then removed later one with a specific cannula.
Laser-assisted Liposuction: This process makes use of a lower-energy wave delivered by a thin laser fiber, often inserted through a small access site. The laser energy is then directed on the fatty area without causing any form of damage to the surrounding tissue, when the process of fat liquidation is done, it becomes easy to take out with the use of a special cannula.
Liposuction, like other forms of existing surgeries have their associated downsides, liposuction causes some risk to the patients.
The first case of issue arising from a liposuction procedure, is when a patient does not get the desired result. The surgeon must pay attention to understand the description of patients, and let them understand the chances of achieving the desired shape before going ahead with the surgical process.
There could be cases of reaction to the anesthesia given as well as reaction to bleeding.
The skin may appear irregular after the success of the surgical operation, and this is could be as a result of; uneven fat removal. Bad healing and even poor skin elasticity. Appearance of skin irregularities could either be temporary or permanent, damage beneath the skin from the tube of the cannula used for fat removal procedure, can make the skin have a permanent spotted appearance.
Temporary numbness is likewise very possible, skin infection although rare cannot completely be stricken out.
Temporary pockets of fluid can also be formed underneath the skin, but could be drained with a needle.
Although it is a rare case, but the cannula used for the removal of fat can puncture the internal organ, creating an emergency complication.
During surgical procedure, the pieces of loose fat may get washed away and then get trapped inside the blood vessel, further complication comes from it gathering in the lungs or even worse, travelling into the brain. When this happens, a medical emergency has to be done.
Shift in the fluid level occurring from injecting and suctioning fluids several times can cause serious risk to the kidney, heart and the lungs.
An anesthetic used during fluid injection, called lidocaine, although it is a safe procedure generally, but in some really rare cases, it can cause serious heart or central nervous system toxicity.
Skin death or necrosis and even death in some cases.
Conclusion.
There are people who have gone through liposuction and are living very fine maintaining their new-found body and shape, on the other hand, some lives have been lost, and certain shape irregularities created as well. If you must get it done, ensure you are speaking with a certified surgeon who will let you into the procedure in details, and who is excellent on the job. Getting the surgery done with a quack which may come at a cheaper amount could result in loss of life, which is definitely not worth it at all.
