Hello everyone, friends. I hope you are having a good day. Grave and graveyard visits are very important in our culture. We visit mosques and cemeteries that we sometimes come across by chance in the places we visit. Today, I would like to talk about a historical mosque and cemetery from the Ottoman period and show you a few photos I took.
The name of the mosque is Alaybey Mosque. When I first read its name, I thought it was from the Seljuk period. I mentioned that I have an interest in history, so as I research Seljuk and Ottoman history frequently, I learned that the historical buildings called by this name usually belong to the Seljuk period. However, as I guessed, Alaybey Mosque is not from the Seljuk period, but from the Ottoman period. The outside of the mosque looked quite imposing with its door and rusty iron window railings.
Caminin ismi Alaybey Camii.
We came across this mosque and cemetery by chance in Bozcaada. We wanted to go right in and have a look around. Although Bozcaada was quite crowded, there were not many visitors to this mosque and cemetery. We thought it was not very interesting for tourists and young people. I think cemeteries are mostly visited by elderly and middle-aged aunts and uncles. This detail also caught my attention in the Alaybey Mosque. 🕌
As I read from the information board in front of the mosque, this mosque was built in 1702 by Sultan Abdülmecid. However, it is of course impossible that it has not remained intact since then. As we can read from the information board at the entrance of the mosque, it was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2006 and the mosque has its present appearance. For this reason, there was a board with words praising Sultan Abdülmecid in the colloquial language of the period. Next to this text was a translation of the words with their modern equivalents.
The tombs in the courtyard of the mosque are written in the written language of the period. For this reason, there were marble slabs next to the entrance showing who each tomb belonged to, respectively. As we understand from the titles of the names written on the plates, there were important personalities living in Bozcaada at that time in this cemetery. ⚰️
The general appearance of the cemetery and the mosque was very clean and well-maintained. It was adorned with colorful flowers and was abundant in greenery. I have to admit that I was sad while visiting the cemeteries. That's all I'm going to write for today. Goodbye.
