Blame the GDog galenkp@galenkp. He had the #weekendengagement topic of favorite photos and places. What was he thinking? Now I really want a road trip and I'm going to spend my weekend dreaming.

I went looking for one specific photo, and finally found it. In the meantime I transferred maybe 20 meaningful to me photos that I'm going to share here. Most of these have been published somewhere, sue me if you don't like it.

Vermillion Cliffs.JPG

The Vermillion Cliffs near the Grand Canyon. This is one of my favorite photographs I have ever taken because of a happy accident. See the full moon just over the rim in the left of frame. I didn't know it was there when I took the picture, I found it when I was editing. I went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to get a good look at that moon, but I didn't expect to see it when I was leaving the area.

North Rim Camp.JPG

My friend Bob at the campsite we used on the North Rim. It's his tent and motorcycle and chair. One of the tables is mine, as is the insulated bag under the table. Motorcycle grade ice chest :) When Bob and I camp together we KNOW what the other is bringing so we don't double up on things we don't need to.

Moki Dugway.JPG

The Moki Dugway in SE Utah near Mexican Hat. It's between Monument Valley and Valley of the Gods. It is one of the most spiritual places I have ever visited and that road is a real challenge. I just love the place.

Mittens.JPG

Speaking of Monument Valley. This is probably it's most famous landmark called 'the Mittens'. It's right at the start (this is taken from the Visitor Center parking lot) and an incredible vista. Just a stunning area.

Black Canyon Camp.JPG

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado. One of the least visited parks in the entire system and shouldn't be. The park itself is just stunning and the camping area is the best in the whole National Park System from my perspective. It's just terrific.

Anza Borrego Camp.JPG

Another of my favorite campsites. Anza Borrego State Park, California. This photo is of my camp, but the sunrise and clouds and mountains all conspire to make this another of my favorites.

Death Valley.JPG

Death Valley National Park, California. Of the hundreds of photos I've taken there I think this one may show the best of all. That is sand dunes and hard rock and craggy peaks all in the same frame. It's another extraordinary place.

Hells Canyon Tree.jpg

This ancient tree is standing guard over the road into Hell's Canyon. The Snake river is the border between Idaho and Oregon, this tree is on the Oregon rim. It's as remote and wild as it looks and the road is like a carnival ride on a motorcycle.

Badlands Sunflower.JPG

Badlands National Park, South Dakota. I just love the single sunflower against the cliffs and inhospitable land.

I'm going to stop here. I'm not done looking, or sharing, but I don't want this to be TLDR. You can blame Galen. It's entirely his fault.

All words and photographs in this post are mine. For better or worse.
