The more things change...

'Our Place' is real, and there are always changes-even in a rental. Like, for instance, I just changed the flapper in my toilet. It (finally) became apparent to me that I'd installed the wrong one several years ago. I had a 'high volume' flapper in a 'low volume' toilet. Nobody but me will ever notice the change, but it'll save water and flush better.

A lot of city changes are like that flapper. Little and for the most part not noticed at all by the residents. I spent a significant amount of time looking for a farmer's market building in Spokane, Wa that no longer exists. Locals don't/can't notice but a landmark was gone from my memory.

I'm sure the apartment building that replaced it is accepted and congratulated by locals, if not by every visitor.

Change is certain, even if the outcome of change isn't.
