I read quite a lot. As in several books every week, sometimes as many as one a day. I'll read just about anything, but my favorite genres of fiction include fantasy and science fiction.
I decided to add in an occasional book review--just to let you all know about any books I find that I think are well worth the read.
I've been an avid follower of Alastair Reynolds books for quite some time. About five years ago, I read Revelation Space and immediately fell in love with his storytelling.
This book, Revenger, stands as my favorite yet by Mr. Reynolds.
Quickly about him before I tell you about the book. On his website, he tells us
Professionally, I was a scientist before I became a full-time writer, although the two professions overlapped for a good >few years. My research area was astronomy and astrophysics, and I spent a long period of time working in and around >the European Space Agency’s main research establishment in the Netherlands. Perhaps unsurprisingly, my fiction is >strongly informed by my time as a scientist – I try to make my invented universes and futures make some sort of sense >with regards to physics and biology – but I hope I am not too slavish about it.
You can definitely tell he knows science when you are reading his books. He doesn't make ridiculous claims about what may be possible in the future. Instead, he sticks to a believable future, albeit sometimes a somewhat dystopian future such as found in the book Revenger.
What I like most about his writing is that although he is writing "science fiction" what he is actually writing is people. In this book, he immediately draws us in to the daily, real struggle for one young girl. As she makes choices, she is caught up in a larger issue, that of survival for her and her sister. The story takes us on a rollicking ride as one girl becomes enmeshed in a space crew that not only wants to survive, but plunder the treasures that can be found between the stars.
I rate Revenger as an easy 9.8 out of 10. The writing is superb, the science is spot on, the challenges faced come about because of choices made by the characters.
Revenger is a fast-paced read that will have you turning the pages as fast as possible to find out what happens next. Get it, you will be delighted and entertained!
