I think a way for them to stop it is to completely tarnish the image of cryptos to the point where they couldn't enter the mainstream (due to the usage by criminals, ransomware etc, scaring the public)

I hope what you're saying is right! What i'm scared of is governments making a rash decision that would put the mainstream off crypto currencies, but i don't think they will ever be able to control them.

Funny that the reason cryptos are not trusted is because of untrustworthyness of the very things our society trusts, such as exchanges and banks etc....
