All over the Philippines you will find massive trees, in most areas the people believe that spirits and ghosts live in them. One tree in particular is revered and somewhat feared, the Balete tree, known in some parts as the Dalakit. This tree often engulfs other trees, once encased the host tree dies off leaving a void inside where said ghosts dwell.

In one part of Cebu fearing the tree spirits while undertaking the widening of a road a decision was made to build around the trees leaving them in place thus making a strange section of road with driving hazards of giant trees in the lane, they have since been removed.

On Negros island there are specimens that are believed to be 1300 years old. Their upward growth is not so fast they tend to get wider with age dropping new vines which intertwine adding to the girth. The first image is a 400 year old specimen with my slightly younger wife next to it.

This next example has been around a lot longer, we were told by locals it was about 1000 years old, imagine the number of ghosts and ghouls living inside, you can just about see myself and Koz stood at the bottom.
