Type of turbine
There are three types of turbine made here, Turgo, Pelton and Cross Flow.
Turgo is suitable for high head and high flow. Power range to 3Kw, depends on rate of flow. This turbine usually used to generate low power output. It has a semi sphere shape and usually directly connected to motor.
Pelton is suitable for high head and high. Power range to 10Kw, depends on rate of flow. This type can produce much more stronger power compared to Turgo. Instead of just a normal shape cup, Pelton have its own unique design allowed the system to be much more efficient. Motor and Turbine have separate bodies, the only thing that connect between them is the belting or contact between wheel.
Cross flow is suitable for low head and low flow. Power range to 50Kw, depends on rate of flow. It is hard to find suitable places to install this turbine.
Concrete Turbine
Concrete turbine is basically, a turbine made up from concrete. This technique was taught in Sri Lanka to some of the staff who was sent there to learn. It was tested in Longkogungan, one of the village which still doesn’t have a proper road access. Without proper road, it’s hard to deliver heavy stuff, like body of a pelton for example, to site. Before filling cement inside the plastic body mould, the plastic mould should be ensured to have correctly position on evenly levelled ground, this to ensured so that the cement won’t slide during the process of hardening, which can ruin the mould shape later on. It is best to leave the cement for two weeks for it to be completely harden.
