Sometimes, insecurity is not just a headline on the news. It is a mother sitting awake at night, waiting for her child to come home.
Think about the Chibok schoolgirls who went to school in 2014, expecting to return to their families, but were kidnapped by Boko Haram. Years later, the pain of that incident is still remembered. Similar incidents happened in Dapchi, Kankara and Kuriga, where children were also taken from their schools.
Imagine being a parent who sends a child to school believing that education will give that child a better future, only to receive a phone call that the school has been attacked. That is the human side of insecurity.
Beyond school kidnappings, Nigerians also face banditry, terrorism, armed robbery, communal violence and kidnapping for ransom. Farmers sometimes fear going to their farms, travellers worry about dangerous roads, and families are forced to leave their homes because they no longer feel safe.
The saddest part is that insecurity takes away more than lives and property鈥攊t takes away people's peace of mind and their hope for a normal life.
Nigeria needs a situation where children can go to school without fear, farmers can work on their farms safely, and families can sleep peacefully in their homes. Security is not a luxury; it is necessary for Nigerians to live, work and build a better future.
