This is one heck of a brilliant crime / prison thriller movie i'd totally enjoyed watching. I emphatically recommend “Brawl in Cell Block 99” to any fans of said genre. After the critically acclaimed, 2015, western-horror, movie “Bone Tomahawk”, i was so eager to see yet another directed S. Craig Zahler second featured movie, who seems to be a promising young filmmaker whose filmography has since being a shock to me/his audience with him delivering a bone snapping and crunching violence film, and also with a strong story plot.
Movie: Brawl In Cell Block 99 (2018)
Genre: Action, Thriller, Drama
Director: S. Craig Zahler
Cast: Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, Udo Kier, Marc Blucas, and Tom Guiry
Synopsis: A former boxer-turned-drug runner lands in a prison battleground after a deal gets deadly. (Imdb)
Review: ''Brawl'' is simply an interesting and fun mix of cinematic ideas. The film is beautifully put together by Zahler, from the photography to the sound design/mix, to the sets, to the edit. However, if a movie doesn’t have an intriguing main character who has been brought to life by a capable actor, then a movie will only ever reach mediocrity at best. In Brawl, Bradley Thomas is that compelling character, and Vince Vaughn is that capable actor.
Vaughn, who often plays a glib comedic lead, brings an unexpected level of gravitas to his performance, and displays a dramatic range which may surprise many viewers to see him deliver such a complete and outstanding performance in this film. Of course, Vince has been in serious dramatic movies (Into the Wild, Hacksaw Ridge) and TV shows (True Detective season 2) before, but never has he been so convincing in a dramatic role with lots of action packed, tense, full of suspense and surprisingly funny.
So If you are a type that enjoy watching dark and intense movies like me, then you will love this one. Vince Vaughn at his best
