Hello there, internet folks! How are you doing? Things here in Venezuela have calmed down a bit following the events of just over a month ago—the double earthquake. However, something that has been weighing on my mind—and which I saw circulating on social media—was a news story that shocked the entire country: a little dog named Mariposa was rescued from the rubble, only to be cruelly killed by a heartless man days later in a horrific act of animal cruelty. This made me think of one of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories that has always made me shudder: *The Black Cat*.
The protagonist of this story was once a peaceful, kind-hearted man who loved animals—he even owned a cat named Pluto—but his noble, altruistic nature changes drastically as he succumbs to alcoholism. He loses his true self until he becomes unrecognizable; in a fit of rage and unbridled cruelty, he gouges out one of Pluto's eyes and hangs the animal from a tree. Shortly thereafter, the house burns down mysteriously, and a black cat appears that is identical to Pluto, save for a white patch on its chest; yet, the cat's mere presence reminds him of his crime, and his own conscience torments him. He attempts to kill this cat with an axe, but when his wife tries to stop him, he kills her instead and decides to conceal the body by walling it up in the cellar—though the police eventually discover the corpse.
As in almost all of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories, this one leaves open the possibility that the second cat is a supernatural being returned for revenge, or simply a manifestation of the protagonist’s tormented subconscious; this ambiguity is what makes the author’s tales so compelling, as he leaves matters to the reader's imagination—the second cat’s appearance could even have been a mere coincidence. Yet, what is undeniable and quite explicit is that vice leads to madness: the protagonist was once a good, God-fearing man who loved animals, but alcoholism took a devastating toll on him.
However, there is something we must keep in mind—something I once read in my favorite saga, *Harry Potter*, where Sirius Black spoke a profound truth: "We've all got both light and dark inside us." We live in a world of temptations and stimuli—both positive and negative—so it is up to each individual to decide which path to follow: the positive or the negative. The protagonist chose the latter; alcohol clouded his judgment, yet he simply let himself be swept away, ultimately destroying both his family's life and his own.
However, as is customary in all of Edgar Allan Poe's tales, a sense of guilt is strongly present here; it torments the protagonist until he finally confesses his actions in the most absurd manner possible—by striking the wall where his wife had been walled up—implying that, deep down, his subconscious was speaking for him and he actually wanted to confess his crime.
