This is a young adult novel by Care Santos that I found very relevant to our times, although it actually reflects a reality that has been developing since the internet became accessible to everyone. It tells the story of Xenia Buch, a girl who loves to study, always gets good grades, and constantly goes online to study. However, she also loves to read and discuss her favorite books with other readers. This leads her to a forum where she shares opinions about her favorite book: The Catcher in the Rye. It is there, in this online literary forum, that she meets Marcelo, a boy who seems amazing, with whom she connects emotionally almost immediately. However, as time goes on, she discovers some inconsistencies that don't go unnoticed, so she cautiously investigates and discovers the truth about "Marcelo": he isn't who he claims to be. His real name is Eric, and he's in a juvenile detention center accused of murdering a girl.
Esta es una novela de tipo juvenil de Care Santos que me pareció muy apropiada para estos tiempos, aunque realmente plantea una realidad que se ha venido viviendo desde que el internet se hizo accesible para todo el mundo. Nos cuenta la historia de Xenia Buch, una chica que ama estudiar, siempre tiene buenas calificaciones y constantemente entra en la web para estudiar, sin embargo también ama leer y discutir con otros lectores sobre sus libros favoritos, de esta manera llega a un foro en el cuál comparte opiniones sobre su libro favorito: El guardián entre el centeno, y es allí, en ese foro literario digital donde conoce a Marcelo, un chico que parece ser genial, con el cuál conecta emocionalmente casi de inmediato. No obstante, con el pasar del tiempo ella fue descubriendo algunas inconsistencias que no pasaron desapercibidas, así que ella fue investigando cautelosamente y descubrió la verdad sobre "Marcelo" ya que él no era quién decía ser, su nombre real era Eric y estaba internado en un centro de reclusión juvenil acusado de haber asesinado a una chica.
This book exposes an alarming and truly frightening truth: the fragility of truth on social media. On the other side of the screen could be anyone of any age and with any intention, seeking even the slightest opportunity. It's up to each individual to decide how much of their life they want to expose online, keeping in mind that the more information they provide, the more vulnerable they become. The internet is a double-edged sword, so the book warns of the caution that must be exercised, not only regarding personal data but also feelings and trust. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs that could be crucial to avoiding negative situations in the future.
Este libro expone una verdad alarmante y que da realmente miedo, y es la fragilidad de la verdad en las redes sociales, al otro lado de la pantalla puede estar cualquier persona de cualquier edad y con cualquier intención buscando una mínima posibilidad, así que ya depende de cada quién decidir que tanto de sus vidas quieren exponer en internet, teniendo en cuenta que mientras más información suministren más vulnerables se vuelven. El internet es un arma de doble filo, así que el libro advierte sobre la cautela que se debe tener, pero no solo en lo que se refiere a datos personales, sino también a los sentimientos y la confianza, saber reconocer señales de alerta que podrían ser cruciales para evitar malas situaciones a futuro.
Teenagers often magnify feelings and emotions, intensifying them too much, which can make them extremely vulnerable and a target for any potential danger. But the worst part is that they don't perceive it as such; for them, the love they feel is enough to protect them from any harm. The opinions of others are irrelevant, and they consider that they are exaggerating.
Los adolescentes a menudo magnifican los sentimientos y las emociones, los intensifican demasiado y esto podría volvernos extremadamente vulnerables y blanco de cualquier posible peligro, pero lo peor de todo es que no lo perciben como tal, para ellos el amor que sienten es suficiente para protegerlos de cualquier mal, la opinión de otros sobra y consideran que están exagerando.
But just as the book addresses the fragility of truth on social media, the dangers of excessive trust, and all that, it also raises other important issues that must be taken into account. I'm referring, first and foremost, to social inequality: we must recognize that we all have very different realities; some have opportunities, and others simply don't. This doesn't justify our actions, but we must understand that it is a significant factor. We also have the human capacity to change when there is a genuine will to do so. Not everyone is "incorrigible." First, we must analyze the context and discover if the person truly shows signs of wanting to adapt and find a place in society. This leads us to the final point: second chances. The novel invites us not to judge prematurely and close doors; on the contrary, it calls us to empathy.
Pero así como el libro nos habla acerca de la fragilidad de la verdad en redes sociales, del peligro detrás de la confianza excesiva y todo eso, también plantea otros temas importantes que se deben tomar muy en cuenta, me refiero en primer lugar a la desigualdad social: hay que tomar en cuenta que todos tenemos realidades muy diferentes, algunos cuentan con oportunidades y otros simplemente no, esto no justifica nuestras acciones pero hay que entender que es algo influyente, también tenemos la capacidad del ser humano para cambiar cuando realmente existe voluntad para ello, no todos son "seres incorregibles" primero hay que analizar el contexto y descubrir si realmente esta persona presenta síntomas de querer adaptarse y encontrar un espacio en la sociedad, y esto nos lleva a el último punto, las segundas oportunidades, la novela nos invita a no juzgar a priori, y cerrar las puertas, al contrario, nos llama a la empatía.
The pace of the story is quite dynamic and the narrative structure is very interesting; at times it is epistolary (in the form of letters) and offers us different perspectives of the characters, which gives us more information and obviously more context (like the two sides of the coin). In this way, readers can understand both characters, their reasons, and their decisions.
El ritmo de la historia es bastante dinámico y la estructura narrativa muy interesante, en algunas ocasiones es de tipo epistolar (en forma de cartas) y nos ofrece perspectivas diferentes de los personajes, lo que nos ofrece mayor información y obviamente más contexto (como las dos caras de la moneda) de esta manera los lectores podemos entender a ambos personajes, sus razones y sus decisiones.
