I lost my Dad in February 2020. He died right before the mess of the pandemic. The pandemic and lockdowns would have been very hard on him.
My Dad and I had a strained relationship when I was young. I was very independent and strong-willed; of course, at that age, I believed that my dad did not understand my problems.
But over the years, we became very close.
This picture is from our last vacation together. We spent 4 days in Cape Cod, Mass.
My Dad was a tool and die maker by trade, which made him very meticulous no matter the project.
Over time, he taught me to be more of a perfectionist in anything I do.
He also taught me a good work ethic. I would see him go to work regardless of how he was feeling, and he would push through the day.
My Dad was never wealthy, but he was awesome at managing his finances and living within his means. This was another lesson that he taught me.
In his later years, we would talk for hours about pretty much anything. He was always there to offer his advice and counsel whenever I faced an issue or situation.
This is one of the things I miss most. Whenever I encounter an issue or dilemma, I instinctively reach out to call my Dad and then quickly realize that is no longer possible.
Until next time,
John Novak
