Hello there, black-and-white-photography lovers!
If you have never seen this instrument before or it looks similar to something you know, let me introduce it to you. I featured this one on an old photo titled "The Orchestra Man". I was there with all my instruments at the moment. The collection has grown. Making them isn't helping and soon they might even take my bed.
I digress. The instrument is a Portuguese Cavaquinho. It is shaped as a very small guitar and it is the direct ancestor of the Ukulele. However, as the Portuguese language, this instrument has more players in Brazil. The original tuning is the same as the first 4 strings of the guitar (E-B-G-D), but the Brazilians dropped the high E to a D. So, it is tuned in G major.
This one is a souvenir from my trip to Brazil in 2012. I took out of it bag to take some measures. It has the same measures I need for starting to make ukuleles. Maybe even this kind of instrument if someone asks for it. Here in Venezuela, we are fond of Traditional Brazilian Music. Choro is one of the favorite genres of a lot of musicians. At least, the ones that know their harmonies well.
Anyways, I never took photos with it and had the chance right now. It is a very comfortable instrument to hold and play. It uses metal strings, so you need a pick to do your strumming. Hope you enjoy these musical selfies and other photos.

Si creen reconocer este instrumento o se parece a algo que conocen, dejen que les diga cómo se llama. Este en particular formó parte de una foto vieja titulada "El Hombre Orquesta". Fue algo que hice con todos los instrumentos que tenía en ese momento. La colección ha crecido. Hacerlos no ayuda nada. Pronto ocuparán hasta mi cama.
Pero me estoy desviando del tema. Esto es un Cavaquinho. Es un instrumento de origen portugués. Se parece mucho al Ukulele porque es su ancestro directo. Sin embargo, al igual que el idioma portugués, la mayoría de sus ejecutantes están en Brasil. Tanto así que su afinación original Mi-Si-Sol-Re (igual a las 4 primeras cuerdas de la guitarra), fue cambiada al alterar el Mi y bajarlo a un Re. Así que la versión brasileira está afinada en G mayor.
Este es un recuerdo de mi viaje a Brasil por allá en 2012. Lo saqué de su forro para tomar algunas medidas. Tiene unas muy similares a un ukulele de concierto. Es probable que estas medidas me sirvan para empezar a hacer estos instrumentos en mi taller; quizá hasta Cavaquinhos si hay algún interesado. Muchos venezolanos son fans declarados de la música tradicional de Brasil. El Choro es uno de sus géneros favoritos. En especial, para todos aquellos que saben mucho de armonías.
De cualquier manera, aquí quise recrear otras selfies musicales. Nunca me había tomado fotos con él. Es un instrumento muy cómodo para tocar. Usa cuerdas de metal, así que se necesita un plectro para tocar las cuerdas. Espero que disfruten de estas selfies y otras fotos.
