“My mind decides to run when normal people sleep.” — Unknown

Another weekend comes by and some excellent topics to analyse come to us from this community. My choice from the tittle is about not having the need to sleep.

I like the interpretation of rather not having the need to sleep than being unable to do it. The former takes us to the realm of possibility where 24 hours are all ours to do anything we can. The latter, leads to mental problems, physical ailments and ultimately, death (by your own hands or something else). You might understand now why I prefer the first one.

If I didn't have the need to to sleep, I would certainly spent the first days binging content. I'd watch all the movies on my list. Then, move right to my piles of books and finish them. After all this has been achieved, I could start with the hard work.

I love languages. But truth be told, learning then isn't the easiest thing. The big barrier of this is simple. If you do not use the languages you learn in your life, all that knowledge gets thrown in the deep memory bin. It can be saved by some work; it isn't always the case.

I'll go ahead and tackle German and French. They say life is too short to learn German, but I think that's because we sleep a huge chuck of our lives. Without it, I bet all the stuff that makes this language nightmsren fuel would fade away to the light of understanding. Also, there are no nightmares if you can't sleep. French is pretty self-explanatory. Beautiful language. After this two, I'd learn Italian and start with some Asian languages. Maybe Mandarin. Who knows? There's plenty of time!

Another thing I'd do in all this spare time would include getting my feet wet on the pool of music theory. I've learned a whole lot over the the years but there's always new things to learn. And don't forget luthierie. Without the need to sleep, I'd be research more and more stuff about construction of instruments. It would definitely give me the change to tackle some of the deep content of the crafts. All the theory that's been built around the topic over last century. I'm talking about the scope of Physics and Maths. The underlying magic that we feel but usually do not fully comprehend.

My days would be divided in two phases. The active part, where I work on instruments, take time to eat, exercise and practice with skills (carving, playing, etc.); and the bookworm phase, where I'm researching, reading, analysing.

My only concern about this possiblity is food. If one is so active all the time, it implies a whole different nutrition. So, on my first weeks of sleeplessness, I shall get into the planning of how to eat in order to stay healthy. However, I think it won't be so hard to get to the point of a fine diet.

On a last note, I might give my newfound time some thought. It would be a good chance to consider solutions to the big problems of humanity. Maybe I could find some solution with all this extra minutes on my hands. Perhaps the realisation of a doomed species would slap me in the face like a 2 meters wave right when you least expect it.

Who knows? The fact is I'll have plenty of time to understand so many things. And also to binge. Besides, if all of a sudden I feel all my topics and endeavors have reached its peek, it will be the time to for rest and contemplation. A time to just enjoy Al the little things of life before going back to learning like there's no time to waste. I might come back to sleeping. Here it says I don't need it not that I can't do it. We do a lots of things we don't actually need. And I'm not different to the rest. I'm human after all.
