Hi there, my fellow artisans and handcrafts lovers!
We are back for another installment of Woodworking Wednesdays. Today, we'll finally see the closure of a project. As you can see in the photo above the mix and paint gun tells us it time for lacquer. Taking that aside, let's see how this Venezuelan Cuatro looks like.
If you wanna check previous entry, you can click here to see the process from other stages.

These are the last pieces we need to address. We leave towards the end for a simple reason. Unless we have the means to replicate all the things we do, the measurements will always vary. This isn't bad. It makes all pieces unique. Length, height and width are always different.
On this build, I had the chance to work once again with this wood called Muerillo (erisma uncinatum). It's a fairly sturdy wood. This is great for pieces like the bridge since the strings well take a long time to erode it. Once we have flattened the block and gave it the measures we need, we measure the height we'll need for the saddle. Then, we can proceed to do the rest of the work to complete the bridge.
We start by making the wings. Then, use a saw for the slots. One is for the saddle; the other, to tie the strings. After having this shape, we can go ahead and make the holes for the strings. To finish it, we sand everything until the surface is smooth and apply some oil to protect the piece. Once this is done, we have a bridge ready to go!
The saddle is easier. We just need a strip of wood thick enough to get into the slot of the bridge. The upper side of this piece tends to have different places of contact according to the type of compensation needed by the instrument. That's something related to the length of the strings and how sometimes our measures aren't exact. Also, this side needs to be round to prevent wood from cutting into the strings and breaking them.
The nut is harder to make. This is where will have the space between the strings. First, we need to have a good distance from the border of the fretboard. Otherwise, we wouldn't have room to fret the outer strings. Also, we cannot vary the distance between the strings or trying to play the instrument will be too troublesome. After getting our measures, we can cut the slots for the strings and file them. After doing this we have finished this piece.

Before gluing te bridge, we need to clean the finish of the instrument. This is removing all the dust that got stuck of the the top layer of the laquear while it was still fresh. To do this we'll employ water, a 1200-grit piece of sandpaper and a circular motion.
Once we have cleaned all, we can apply wax to polish the surface. Again with a circular motion we can see how the instrument becomes shiny.

This is the adrenaline dose of the month. Now, we need to remove the finish from a section of the sound board. This is to ensure the bridge will be glued properly. First, we determine the position of the bridge. Then, we frame this place with masking tape. This will help us have a guideline of where we need to remove the finish. Then, we proceed to do it with extreme care. It's pretty easy to screw something up during this stage of the process. And that would mean doing the whole finish again.
Once we have cleared this part, we need to make some anchors for the bridge. For this, we drill holes from the saddle slot into the sound boaed. Then, we make the anchors with a toothpick. We need to wait until the glue has dried on the anchors. Finally, we can go ahead and glue the brige in place.
This is the perfect time to test this new tool I purchased at StewMac. It is a bridge clamp. We need to make sure it's on the center and use some other wood pieces to keep the wings down. This way we ensure the bridge glues in ever part. Then, we just have to let it be for 24 hours until we go to the next stage.

This is the last step in the project. Once we start doing this, we know it's almost over. One last thing to keep in mind is the orientation of the tuning machines. If we put them backwards, it will be a problem to tune the instrument. So we better watch out!
When they are fixed with their screws, we can finally get the strings in place and make all the adjustments necessary before tuning the instrument.
Any last fixes will need to wait until the strings stretch. For now, we can call it a build!
Now, I'm waiting for the owner to come and pick it up.
