My name is Wayne Edwards; I’m forty two, never been married, and live with my elderly father. I’ve been put away a few times, for my own protection, but I wouldn’t hurt anyone. I work across the road from Government House where something strange is going on; I know it is; I just don’t know what, but I will find out!
My plan is to arrive at my office building, where I work as a tax accountant, as per normal. From this roof top I will find an undetectable position, which is no easy task for a one hundred and twenty kilo, five foot six man. After dark with my newly acquired surveillance equipment, which I constructed myself, from cheap parts purchased over the internet, I will have the perfect viewing bunker.
“Well what do you think?” I say to no one other than my goldfish. My alarm rings signalling that it is seven o’clock, and time to put my plan into action. I return to work and head straight for the elevator; I hop on, hit the button for my level. While on the elevator I stare at the ground so I don’t make eye contact with anybody, and to ensure I remain undetected. I get off the elevator and take the stairs to the roof. As I open the door I drop down as low as I can, and stealthily slide along the floor so that I’m not seen. It starts to rain, the rain like a cloak covering me, making me invisible, slowly and carefully I survey the rooftop, I spot a gap between two air-conditioning units in the corner of the roof, the ideal choice for a surveillance position.
Having completed my surveillance I retreat retracing the steps to my desk where I continue on as normal. I feel many sets of eyes focused on me, I hope they are just thinking that my car broke down and I got wet on the way to work.
Later that night I returned to my bunker and set up my camera and binoculars, within the hour cars and vans started showing up. I could make out a crowd of people meeting in a room and then moving downstairs. It was hard to see as they didn’t have their lights on. I know something sinister is happening, I need to get a better look. Tomorrow is a public holiday, which provides the perfect opportunity for me to snoop around. For tonight I’ll camp here and maintain a guard.
It’s five in the morning, the sun is rising, I pack up my equipment and leave. This time I take the stairs the whole way down so that nobody asks me what I was doing. As I exit the building I head in the opposite direction of Government House, to the corner store, to ensure that I am not being followed. I finally get back to Government House and enter through the front door to make it look like I am just another early worker.
I am now standing in the room where the large group were last night, and I look around and locate the stairwell. Cautiously I head down the hallway; step by step I reach the end office. In the office there is a computer on the desk, I turn it on, open the document folder, I pause and listen, there are footsteps coming, I need to rapidly escape, I jump into a closet.
As I wait and listen more people enter the office and start talking, I try to make out what they are saying but I can’t. If I get caught they will lock me up again, I need to get out and fast. Suddenly the talking stops and I hear footsteps fading far away; I wait painful minutes and try to open the door. It’s locked. I try again, it can’t be, it still is. I feel anxious as I try to break out, but it is no use the door is industrial strength.
I fumble around the wall desperate for a light switch; I find one and turn it on. I spot a small spade on one of the shelves. I line the shovel and slam my leg down on the handle; a small crack appears in the floor. Sweat trickles down my forehead as I strike the handle again the crack gets bigger. After about thirty strikes the ground below me caves in.
I lay on the ground, exhausted from the digging, dazed and winded from the fall. I open my eyes and look around ten sets of eyes look back at me. It seems that I have fallen into some secret underground den. I recognise some of the faces they’re politicians. I think about running for it but decide I haven’t got a chance; I moan and start rambling uncontrollably. The leader tells me to relax and then offers me a deal to leave quietly. I take it. I don’t want to cause trouble and I’ll be watching them.
