It just occured to me that in exactly two weeks time, my life will be very different. We'll be in the UK by this time and will be getting our shit together.
It's a bit surreal to think that life is about to be so different for us but we're relishing the opportunity. It's going to be a very challenging period in our life but nothing good comes easy.
One way or the other, we'll have to push through all the barriers we'll encounter to become better people. We'll have to use what we have to get what we need and then some.
Culture shock
I'm trying not to go into the place with too many expectations. There's stuff that people have told me about, stuff I've seen in movies and all the social media information but I'm largely going to dwell on my own perception of the society.
I'm not going to go into country like I have a script but instead will try to find ways to express myself that align with the norms of the new society.
For example, I've heard stories about how people in the UK aren't quite as social as Nigerians. I won't go with that in mind but at the same time, I won't act like I'm in Nigeria.
I'll try to find a right balance between my own cultural background and the cultural background of the new society I find myself in.
I don't intend to exactly behave like the Romans in Rome because I'm not Roman. However, I don't also intend to behave exactly like myself because there'll be a lot of cultural tweaking to do before I adjust.
The point is, I intend to make as many friends as possible because I think it will help me adjust to the society and will also make it feel a bit more like home. One way or the other, I'll adjust and start living life in this strange land that I might end up calling my own one day.
