“Are you hungry?” He asked, I looked up and saw that it was my lecturer. Everyone in class turned in my direction. I honestly wasn’t expecting that question. I was shocked by the question so I had to say “What did you say, sir?” Maybe he wasn’t talking to me or made a mistake in his question. Well, he didn’t make a mistake as he asked me again “Are you hungry young lady?” I said “No sir”, He was walking away when he said, “Stop biting your nails”. I was so embarrassed that all through the day I kept wishing I hadn’t come to class, I should have just stayed home, or maybe the ground should have opened and swallowed me.

Growing up as a child, I had a terrible habit of biting my nails. I don’t know where I picked up that habit from though. When caught by my parents I get scolded or disciplined because they didn’t want it to be part of me but I think they tried their best as I grew up with this nasty habit. My mom would say “Biting your nails would introduce germs into your body system and you would fall sick” I was so adamant as I kept on biting my nails.

I think in high school this habit helped me a bit as most of my classmates were punished during the assembly for keeping their nails long, no matter how neat it was, long nails weren’t allowed. So I think biting my nails saved me as most times I just bite them and they are never long. This is because whenever they grow I feel tempted to bite them. I have long nails so it is difficult to notice that I bite my nails.

Most times, I think it’s a subconscious action as I don’t only bite my nails when I am hungry. I could be nervous about a certain situation and I would start biting my nails, I don’t know if it helped but it just happens. A few times I could be extremely bored and since I have nothing to do, biting my nails comes to the rescue. I could be sad and I would have my nails in my mouth. I don’t know if this nasty habit was a therapy but I kept doing it. I look at my siblings and I admire their nails cause it’s so beautiful and they don’t bite it.

After I faced that embarrassment in class, I decided to do everything possible to stop biting my nails. I am still in the process though because sometimes after leaving it for a long time I look at it and it becomes tempting to bite.
I have been able to discover a way to keep me from biting my nails for a long time and that is fixing my nails, applying an artificial nail, and also applying nail polish on it. That way I do not get to bite my nails.

Sometimes when I am extremely nervous and then I look at my nails, I try to look for something else close by so that I could use to it keep my hands busy so it could stay away from my mouth. Growing up this was indeed a terrible habit. Hopefully, I will get to overcome it soon cause I am still in my trying phase at the moment. I’m envious of you all that do not bite your nails.

You’re the real star hehe.
