Experienced in my early twenties with my best girlfriends...
We were kind of "inner circle" 4 best friends girls over a long time deeply connected with each other. Then we met by chance a new, totally nice girl, who also fit perfect to us.
However, one of the old ones had to start an affair with the boyfriend of the new one. And I found myself in the middle of a big dilemma.
Everyone around the new friend knew. Only she didn't, that disappointed me so much, but I wasn't ready to tell her :-( too young, too stupid, too close to the old friends.
After a few weeks, of course, it all blew up. The new friend never spoke a word with us again, there was also no cell phone or internet yet and so I lost her completely out of sight. I think I had written her a letter, or tried to call her, I don't remember exactly. Wanted to apologize, because I knew I had made a very big mistake. But there was no response, which I can understand.
And I also think I ruined my chance for a really great lifelong friendship back then with my silence, because we were so similar in so many ways.
So I lost a friend.
Ha, yes and with the old friend, the one who started the affair, it showed over the years again and again that little lies appeared here and there, which is not supposed to exist in a true and deep friendship. This friendship still exists after all this time, but it got cracks. Unfortunately.
Well, did I learn from this lesson?
15 years later...
Next door lived my friend's brother, he lived in a relationship and I got along really well with the two of them. We did a lot of things together, had mean barbecues, drank coffee almost every day.
But he started an affair with another woman and the douchebag had to tell me about!!! Once again found myself in a dilemma. Watched it for two weeks and then said to him:
"I'll give you 10 days to tell your partner the truth or end the other story, or I'll tell her."
Old coward! Nothing he did.
But I did. I told her on the date. She had already suspected it, but was glad to know it now. And I had preserved two friends.
In 55 years I have seen love, partners, many superficial acquaintances come and go. Those who accompany and accompanied me throughout my life are family and a few good friends.
True friendship cannot go hand in hand with untruth. No matter how uncomfortable the truth may be, that is exactly what makes this handful of really good friendships so valuable. That you can say what you really think, that you are allowed to be exactly who you are - reciprocally.
Everything else does not work. It doesn't matter if the other person knows about the deception or the lie or not. There will always be an undercurrent between the two. Which is worth more? A little short fun or a true friend!
But hmmmmmm quite honestly, when it comes to a purchase, a scan mistake at the checkout, as happened with these two Magnet Bears a long time ago, well then... Thats really no joke, it happend just this way with exactly those magnet bears, you see on the photos here:
I hugged the bears together out of boredom at the checkout. The cashier happened to scan only once. Thus 2 bears for the price of 1 and I had already heard it because it beeped only once.
I felt a little guilty conscience, but with my regular shopping in this supermarket, the bad conscience for 2 EUR was within limits ;-) rather a kind of quantity discount dont you think? And the cashier personally it did not hurt. Wrong return money I always give back, because this would have to pay the person behind the cash register, that does not work for me.
All those wise Beeber words, but you know...
There is a song from the movie Feivel the Mouse Walker:
"Never say never" and I would not say now that I would never lie or cheat a good friend, that I would never steal or embezzle anything, because you never know what circumstances life will lead you into. But at least it's the opinion that would match my values and I think I'm on a good path to sticking to it:
Truth lasts longest and lies have short legs.
Those were my thoughts on this week's Weekend Engagement by @galenkp , a bit of a cross-pollination through the issues surrounding secrets, honesty and lies.
How did you like the little Magnet Bears staging their "post show"?
A late night post from cortisone hyped rubber ball bouncing around Beeber ;-) Good night
