This move will be our third move since 2015 and we've been working towards this moment for a while so I'm pretty prepared in terms of boxes and general organisation.
But like most couples we tend to accumulate and out grow things, and despite our huge downsize when we moved up here, I find I need to downsize some more and start decluttering.
As per usual, being the visual creature that I am, I tapped open Pinterest to search for 'Moving House' and immediately found a lot of handy lists like.
Decluttering: Why it's important
declutter , diːˈklʌtə/
verb
remove unnecessary items from (an untidy or overcrowded place).
In Feng Shui it is often recommend that we declutter our surroundings to allows Chi (life force energy) to flow through our home.
Many people swear this to be true, and from my personal experience I am 100% with them. I declutter and throw things away regularly when I feel like there's stuck energy in the house.
Instantly I feel much better, the house feels fresher and things are back to normal.
It is also said that keeping a tidy home invites more abundance, after all, it sure looks like there's room for more things in your life.
Know what I mean?
Instead of throwing something away, try to donate it first.
I've spoken before about our local Pay It Forward group.
What it basically is, is a Facebook group where locals can post items they no longer need or ask the community for things they do need.
Over the years I've been witness to many random acts of kindness on that page and have always wanted to Pay something forward.
I think it's my time to shine!
I feel like the list above is a great guideline on what you really need to throw out, so if it is broken, expired or damaged beyond repair, the bin is probably a good spot for it.
Make sure you do a quality assurance check. Just because you're giving it away for free doesn't mean you drop the ball.
OR sell it!
Why not right? If you're one of those garage sale people, power to you! EBay is also handy.
In Australia we have Gumtree (The aussie Craigslist) and that's been good to me. The two white Ikea shelves you all keep seeing in my photos are second hand from Gumtree and it's been the best shelves ever.
My house would be chaos without them.
See?
Someone else's trash can sometimes be someone else's treasure.
Me?
I'll be sticking to idea number 1, the pay it forward route as I have all sorts of things to pass on.
I find myself really digging in and throwing away not just rubbish, but also remnants of my past. I feel like it's because I want a full and complete new start.
I know psychic friends who can no longer shop at second hand stores because they feel the energy of the last owner too keenly.
Things suck up energy, this is one of the reasons why smudging is so important.
Although I smudge on the regular, I know it's time to really usher in our new life surrounded with things that no longer link us to the people we were 10 years ago.
Cos sometimes, you have to let go to really experience the future ahead.
I suppose this is another way to declutter lol
When was the last time you had a big clear out?
