Did I tell you guys about that time I made candles?
Once upon a time, ages ago, I decided why not make candles.
I figured couldn't hurt to try and I do enjoy learning how to do things because I felt one can never have enough skills under their belt just in case.
It was great for a little while. I got myself a starter set and heaps of fragrances, had a fair amount of orders and then I started noticing something.
At first I thought it was working in the kitchen on my feet usually in the heat that kept causing these intense headaches everytime I poured wax. But then we moved to the mountains and despite the much cooler weather and reduced time on my feet the headaches persisted.
After a bit of research I found out that fragrances aren't good for us. In fact there's a lot of toxic chemicals in fragrances that can cause numerous health problems so I stopped making candles and threw away all my fragrances.
The in laws have an acupuncture/massage shop in Sydney and wanted to sell things from the shop. They asked me if I was still making candles or bath bombs (people still message me about my bath bombs) or anything, and if I had any available for consignment.
I sent a box of my work over for them to look at and was surprised to hear they wanted everything. Paintings, both acrylic and ink, coasters, orgonites... and candles..
So here I am making candles again but this time with essential oils which are derived from nature and so much better for us than fragrance.
Since this is the first time I'm using essential oil to scent my candles I thought I'd give Lavender a go. It was night time anyway and lavender is know to calm and aid sleep; and I had a full bottle of it so why not..
Also... Why not give it a bit of crystal love and a sprinkle of glitter while I'm at it.
The crystals were non negotiable. No matter what I had to have crystals on there so it was a toss between lavender or glitter.
Scent throw wise... Even though I went with the suggested 15ml of oil per 450ml of soy wax recipe (and even then I tossed a bit more oil in) it didn't have that strong punch fragrance had. I'm thinking of upping the oil to 25ml next time.
Lavender is such a great, soothing scent. It's known to reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep and promote healthy brain functions.
I actually used it in my birthing diffuser blend to help me with child birth and I can definitely say it worked. I had a very easy, quick and relaxed natural home birth.
Next time you want to buy candles why not look for aromatherapy ones.
Imho they're way better than anything that has fragrance. They're not going to make you sick, they might even help you feel better.
