Bam bam, another season in the books and Season 172 turned out to be a surprisingly packed one.
A lot of games were played, a lot of thoughts went through my head, and more than once I had to stop and ask myself where I actually want to focus.
This season I spent most of my time on my alt account, mainly because I wanted to play without pressure and just see what would happen.
That account had been living in Frontier for quite a while, and now that the Frontier set on it is getting close to completion I started wondering how it would hold up in Modern and if it would still be fun to play there.
My main account was on a Modern cooldown, which made the timing perfect, because it allowed me to fully shift my attention to the alt account without feeling like I was missing out.
It became a small experiment, not about climbing fast, but about seeing what is possible with limited resources.
I burned a lot of excess Chaos and Rebellion soulbound cards, which gave me some Glint to spend and that always feels good.
At the same time it was also very necessary, because going into Modern with mostly Frontier cards is rough and climbing out of Bronze is far from easy.
Honestly that might be where this account stays for a while, at least until the deck grows a bit stronger.
I can already see exactly where the weaknesses are, since a few key cards are missing and those would make climbing much faster.
Still my intention with this account is clear, I do not want to buy cards directly and I want to see how far I can get by only playing and recycling rewards.
The plan is simple and slow, play consistently, earn whatever the game gives, sell what makes sense, and use that to slowly grow the account over time.
Last week I won a black foil Frontier card, which is currently up for sale.
This week I pulled a skin from an Ultimate chest, and that one also went straight to the market.
If those sales go through I already know exactly what I want to do next.
I want to upgrade a summoner, ideally to level 3, and if things line up perfectly maybe even level 4, although that would definitely be a stretch.
On my main account the season went smoothly in Wild, the deck still performs well and games feel stable, but the cracks are starting to show.
Maintaining rating is getting harder every season, and when I look back at the numbers the slow decline since season 134 becomes very clear.
There is no mystery behind that.
I simply cannot keep up with upgrading the deck at the pace that is needed, because the costs have gone up to a point where it no longer feels reasonable.
Instead I shifted my spending toward land, which was planned and something I fully committed to this season.
I ended up buying three cards and that part felt very rewarding.
I picked up two Tireless Farmhands, one fully maxed at level 10 and another at level 5, along with a Kinbound Druid at level 3.
Those upgrades fit perfectly into my long term land plan and felt like money well spent.
I also tried something different just for fun and curiosity.
I bought 200 Chaos Legion packs, opened them all, burned the cards, crafted a Kinbound Druid, and sold it to see how the numbers would play out.
Did it make a profit, unfortunately not, since it cost me around 10$ at that moment.
Still I enjoyed the process a lot, and if I had waited longer it would have turned into a profit, so I see it more as a learning experience than a failure.
Along the way I did make one painful mistake.
The original plan was to keep the legendary Chaos Legion summoner and maybe a high level gold foil pull.
In the final burn cycle I was not paying enough attention and ended up burning everything.
That one hurt 😢.
And just like that a new season is already around the corner, with Winterfest coming up, the Town Hall project moving forward, and maybe even the avatar project entering the picture.
This month is shaping up to be an expensive one 🤣.
You cannot have everything, and at some point choices have to be made about where to focus time and resources. Season 172 made that very clear.
