Have You Ever Felt Stuck? ..
Maybe you are familiar with the term FUD, fear uncertainty and doubt. It’s a dreaded word actually, and one I don’t like even thinking about half the time. But these days it seems like it’s surrounding us. It sits on the sidelines while watching our moves, waiting to stricken us paralyzed. Fear, uncertainty and doubt, to the point where we cannot make decisions any longer. Worst case is we make the wrong choices and possibly are left feeling stuck!!
I’m beginning to think that is what this painting was all about from the beginning; FUD.
We’re heading into the weekend and I’m contemplating painting something. I’m also contemplating finishing some thing I’ve already started. This is one of those paintings. It’s a simple painting comprised of only black and white values. It measures roughly 5 x 7“ and I’ve put about two hours of time into it. I just have a feeling and know that it’s not quite complete yet. Have you ever gotten that feeling? Just knowing something may not be done, so we put it aside and save it for later.
I’ve struggled with where I think this piece is going .. Where it started from and what I envisioned from the beginning. Sometimes this happens. Sometimes we get lost and wander from our original ideas. This piece took a turn toward a mixture of abstract and realism. If somebody asked me what this painting was about, I don’t know if I could tell them with any certainty. And that’s why I think it was derived from my place of FUD.
Let's first start out with some process photos ..
Break Time!
Molly helped me out by being my moral support through the whole thing. She is such a good friend, keeping her daddy company and never leaving my side. Well that is until I sat back and pulled the painting closer.. she then took off to a different safe spot.
Back To Work! ..
The next step was to remove the tape, but first my interpretations so far...
My interpretation .. Now that I have given it some thought and can understand what I was feeling at the time of painting it, is more uncertainty than anything. The shadows awesome individuals in poses of uncertainty and concern. Maybe uncertainty and concern about what is happening in the world or more simply in the direct environment. Maybe these people are crypto traders trying to figure out when the next big dip is going to occur. They wonder whether they should buy or sell or diamond hand what they have.
There is one gentleman in the very front and center seems to be taking action. He’s on the phone making moves! Or maybe he’s on the phone telling his loved ones good news or bad news. Maybe he is just placing a pizza order. I suppose it could be whatever you like it to be. That’s the nice part about interpreting art… It doesn’t always half to be in line with the artists viewpoint.
I also painted in some building like angles at the top of the piece and some round head like figures at the very bottom (to show there are more people crowded in below). I also included a big, black circle in the center of the painting. This black circle confused me slightly to where at one point I removed it, then felt as though I put it there for a reason so I painted it back in. It’s an obvious statement and focal point in the scene and demands our attention. But what is it? What is this big black circle in the center of my painting?
The circle was there..
The circle was painted out..
Then I painted it back in again, but this time all black..
And that’s where I left off..
That’s where I decided to stop with this painting and wait it out. I was trying to grapple with the idea of what the circle is and why I placed it where I did. There may be no obvious explanation for it, and maybe that’s where the curiosity and wonderment will come from. Maybe if I just leave it alone the way it is, others will interpret it as they see fit.
So that’s where I am this weekend. Considering starting something new, considering altering this painting so I have answers, or leaving it alone and calling it FUD.
I’m Possibly Stuck Here

"Four be the things I am wiser to know:
Idleness, sorrow, a friend, and a foe.
Four be the things I'd been better without:
Love, curiosity, freckles, and doubt.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
Three be the things I shall have till I die:
Laughter and hope and a sock in the eye.”
