[MOVIE] What if the ghost they were hunting was never the real killer?... THE EAST PALACE

Have you ever started a drama because you thought you were about to watch something scary, only to realize that the ghosts were actually the least frightening thing in the story?

Yes, that was me with The East Palace

I saw it on TikTok, how people were talking about it, the trailer looked dark I'm not gonna lie, there were spirits, a mysterious palace, dead princes and all those things that normally make me say, “Abeg, I don't watch horror.”

But then I heard the drama was finally complete.

So I thought, Okay, let me just try it.

And honestly? I am glad that i did watch it

Because The East Palace is not simply a story about a ghost haunting a palace, it is a story about what happens when people bury the truth, kill for power, blame the dead for the sins of the living and then expect those secrets to stay buried.

And the more I watched, the more questions I had.

Why were the princes dying one after another? Was the palace really cursed?

Who was the woman everyone called the pond spirit?

Why was the King so desperate to get rid of her?

And perhaps my biggest question was, what if the spirit everyone was afraid of wasn't actually the person killing the princes?

That question is what makes this drama worth watching.

At the centre of the story is Gu-cheon, a man who can see and fight spirits and even cross into the mysterious Realm of Gwi.

He isn't exactly the type of person who wakes up every morning excited to save a palace, in fact, he would rather stay away from all of it.

But the King has other plans and ordered him to the palace since he could see ghost

The royal princes are dying, and the palace believes an old curse has returned.

Thirty years earlier, a court lady who was favoured by the King was falsely accused of having an affair with a royal guard. The accusation came from the Queen Dowager, who was jealous of the King's affection for her. The woman was pregnant, lost her child and eventually died after cursing the royal family.

From that moment, the palace believed she had returned as a won-gwi, that is a spirit held in the human world by resentment, determined to destroy the royal bloodline.

Now, decades later, the princes are dying in similar circumstances.

So the King secretly summons Gu-cheon.

What was his mission? It was simply to find the pond spirit, destroy it and save the royal family.

Sounds straightforward, right? But it's not even close.

Because Gu-cheon doesn't have to investigate alone.

He is paired with Saeng-gang, a court lady who has a strange ability of her own, she can hear the dead.

And Saeng-gang isn't just another palace maid, she is actually the King's illegitimate daughter.

Her own mother died under mysterious circumstances after being accused of hiding something connected to the palace's curse.

So while Gu-cheon is trying to figure out which spirit is attacking the royal family, Saeng-gang is quietly searching for answers about her mother's death.

Imagine being surrounded by dead people who can tell you things the living are desperately trying to hide.

Would you listen or would you rather pretend you heard nothing? Because Saeng-gang listens.

And what she discovers begins to expose just how ugly the palace really is.

There is also the strange ggeomeoksali, that little creature that follows Gu-cheon around. At first, I was wondering what this tiny thing had to do with anything, was it a pet ohhh, it's a spirit

But eventually, even that little creature became an important figure

Then there are the women locked inside the salt storehouse, and this part made me ask, what exactly happened in that place?

Like thirteen young court ladies had been locked inside the storehouse and someone set up a fire to burn the alive to conceal the truth

Instead of allowing their deaths to be properly acknowledged, their remains were sealed away in jars.

And when their resentment remains trapped for years, what do you think happens? They become spirits.

So Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang aren't simply fighting ghosts. They're uncovering stories of people who were silenced, forgotten and sacrificed by the palace.

And just when you think you've figured out the mystery of the pond spirit, the drama turns everything upside down.

So the pond spirit wasn't the real killer

Gu-cheon eventually confronts her and manages to sever the resentment keeping her attached to the human world.

But then something happens that makes the entire investigation even more disturbing.

Another prince dies.

Wait...

If the pond spirit has been defeated...

WHO IS STILL KILLING THE PRINCES?

That was the moment for me, because suddenly, the question wasn't “Which ghost is haunting the palace?”

It became, “Which living person created this entire mess?”

And the answer is connected to the Crown Prince.

In that, the Crown Prince could also hear spirits, just like Saeng-gang. Through the dead, he discovers the truth about how his father became King.

And instead of breaking the cycle... he repeats it.

He kills his own brothers and allows everyone to believe the pond spirit is responsible but the King eventually discovers what his son has done.

And instead of allowing his son to become King through murder, he kills him.

Now imagine dying while believing your father condemned you for doing something that he and his mother had done themselves decades earlier.

What would you feel?

Anger? betrayal? revenge?

For the Crown Prince, that resentment becomes something much worse.

He becomes an ak-gwi, a spirit consumed by destruction.

And suddenly, the palace has a much bigger problem than the pond spirit.

Because this time, the enemy isn't simply a ghost looking for justice, it is someone who wants the entire royal bloodline destroyed.

And Gu-cheon has to stop him, but stopping an ak-gwi comes with a price.

A terrible one at that

Gu-cheon eventually makes a deal with the Primordial Gwi-mae to obtain the weapon capable of destroying the Crown Prince's spirit.

But the price? Gu-cheon himself will become an ak-gwi.

Would you make that sacrifice, if it were you?

Would you willingly become the very thing you've spent your life fighting if it meant saving someone you love?

Gu-cheon does, because he care about Saeng-gang

And that brings us to one of the things I loved about The East Palace.

It isn't really asking us to be afraid of ghosts, it is asking us to look at what created the ghosts in the first place.

Greed, jealousy, power, murder to conceal secrets, unresolved grief and people who thought they could get away with everything simply because they were powerful enough to silence everyone who knew the truth.

That is why I kept watching...

Because every time I thought I understood the mystery, the drama gave me another question.

Was the curse real?

Who really started it?

Why were innocent people sacrificed?

Why did the King hide the truth?

Was the Crown Prince a victim, a villain, or both?

And if the dead are finally given the chance to speak, can the living survive what they have to say?

So, if you've been avoiding The East Palace because someone told you it's a horror drama, I honestly understand, I almost did the same thing.

Don't go into it expecting only ghosts jumping out of dark corners, go into it expecting a palace mystery wrapped inside a supernatural story, where every dead person seems to know something the living don't want you to discover.

And by the time you realize that the ghosts were never the real problem...

you'll probably already be asking yourself, okay, so who is REALLY behind all of this?

And trust me, that is the question that kept me watching...
