There is a legend, that in immemorial times near one of bank Sozh river boats constantly cast aground. To avoid it, locals shouted to the boats by "Go! Mel!". Since then the city received the name - Gomel.
On the basis of this beautiful legend, in 2007, on the embankment of the Sozh River, the sculptural composition "Monument to the First Gomelchanin" was opened, which almost immediately became a visiting card of the city (52.424524, 31.019014). The idea of creating this monument for many years was considered by the local sculptor Vyacheslav Dolgov.
The sculptural composition represents the round superficial pool in which center - the boat mooring to the coast in which there is a hunter with an oar in a hand and onions behind shoulders. Near it the lynx (a symbol of Gomel) settled down. They moor to the coast of Sozh on which the city of Gomel was soon founded. How to you such a beautiful embodiment of the ancient legend?
