Well, well, will you look at that? Despite several days of hard freeze conditions around here that wreaked all sorts of havoc, I have some late season sugar snap peas that just emerged. Nature never ceases to amaze me. I'm kind of excited about these as they are the 'original' Sugar Snap heirloom variety.
These were planted right around December 30th or so, and I had forgotten about them. They were planted in two rows in a 32" wide x 56' long 'back to eden' raised bed. I actually planted them deep under the wood chip mulch layer. Most seeds when planted that deep never make it to the surface, but legumes store a bunch of energy in their seeds. I'm betting the fact they were 6" deep is what likely helped them survive the freeze.
Now that they're up I'm thinking I'm going to have to get some sort of trellis in place soon. This variety can grow up to 5' tall. I'll probably just put in a few t-posts and hang some trellis netting from a top line/wire. If all goes well we should be harvesting these babies somewhere near the end of March.
