Being a teacher by profession, along the way confirming that you were born for this and also realizing that it is your passion is definitely wonderful.
Hello to all my dear Hive friends! This is my second post in this community and I am very excited to share my experiences with you. I am a teacher by profession and today I want to let you know the long road of my life that led me to study education.
My name is Eashell Baptista, I am Venezuelan and I currently live in the beautiful and charming Margarita Island; but it was not always like that, I was born in the city of Los Teques 45 years ago and that is where this story begins.
My first years of preschool I lived in a tiny preschool called "Mi Jardín" and this was very close to my house, to get to school we only had to walk a few blocks. As a little girl I was characterized for being very introverted and a crybaby, but this crying was mostly a product of not wanting to be away from my mom, I had what here in Venezuela they say "mamitis", to the point that until I was almost 10 years old I did not stay with anyone else but her (my mommy) or my beautiful aunt Omaira, otherwise staying with someone while my mom went out to run some errand was simply impossible, what I did was cry since my mom was leaving me until she came to pick me up. I think today how terrible this situation was for her and today I pity her and thank her for her infinite patience with me.
I bring this up because according to what my mommy tells me, I cried in preschool for almost the entire first year, I cried from the time I was dropped off until they came to pick me up. However, once the long period of adaptation was over, my mom tells me that I adored my school and my teachers. I always remember my teacher Moty, a loving and very maternal woman whom I loved and whom I still remember.
When I finished preschool I changed schools and now unlike the previous one, to get to this one I had to take 2 buses, and well, the story of crying was repeated... but this time with 6 years old haha. For many days I was crying or being sad all day and I stopped crying when they went to pick me up. So the days went by until I finally got used to my new school "Margarita Bosco" was its name, of that time I have wonderful and happy memories; there I studied from 1st grade to 6th grade, and impressively for me I remember the name of all my teachers: 1st grade Auxiliadora, 2nd Epifania, 3rd Marisela, 4th Hilda, and 5th and 6th America; there I made beautiful friendships with whom I enjoyed every day of school. It was a little school of nuns, you can imagine how many stories I have about it.
My 5th and 6th grade teacher America is the one who marked my life, what a special teacher, she made me understand that phrase that our students will not remember us for the classes we gave them but for how we treated them and how they felt.
Indeed, I remember very few classes she gave me, I don't remember her shouting, nor being annoying... but what I do remember perfectly is her physical appearance and I would even dare to say that I remember her voice... and the reason? is that I watched her a lot, she would talk and I would get lost looking at her and I would say to myself while watching her: I am going to be a teacher and I am going to be like her. It is there where, in a retrospective exercise of my life, I am sure it was the trigger that planted in me the idea of becoming a teacher.
And I started studying engineering at the age of 17 at the UCV..... What happened then? At what point did I deviated? At what point in my life did I change course, what made me turn my gaze from that dream that caught me as a child, as I say of that crush of wanting to be a teacher.
At that time (I don't know if this is the way it is handled nowadays) we students accumulated what we called the general average, which was counted from the 1st year until the 5th year, each career in each university demanded a certain average to enter, So what came next when I was in 5th year of high school was to take my GPA and see in the careers and universities that I could enter, after 5 years I had left behind that magical moment when I wanted to be a teacher, it is more I took it as a childish illusion, since, obviously many school-age girls want to be like their teacher.
And so began the decision making process of what would be the career that would define my work and my lifestyle. Now I see that it was not just any decision, but at that time, I let myself be carried away by the social pressure of friends and family. It turns out that my average allowed me to choose to study nothing more and nothing less than engineering at the Central University of Venezuela and everyone advised me to enter engineering, which was labeled as a very good career, this, I imagine, associated to the payments and the quality of life that an engineer had.
And that is how I began my university studies. I lived in Los Teques and to get to the University in Caracas (Capital of Venezuela) at 7:00 a.m. I had to get up very early, a transport would come looking for us at 5:30 a.m. and although in favorable conditions the distance was very short, I had to get up very early. And although in favorable conditions the distance from Caracas to Los Teques is no more than 30 minutes, it turns out that the city of Los Teques is connected (among other things) with Caracas by a main road called Panamericana, a road of only 2 channels: one to go and one to return, Los Teques had become and even today is a dormitory town, then there were many people who lived in Los Teques and made life in Caracas. You can imagine then the amount of people wanting to get there... this resulted in truly dantesque queues on the Panamericana, forcing us to leave almost two hours in advance. I remember that we would arrive at the stop very dark, with a lot of warm clothes on, and we would blow smoke out of our mouths because of the cold, but at that time the bakeries were already open and we always took the opportunity to buy a coffee with milk and warm our hands and our body with the hot drink.
I spent 2 years studying engineering, but, I really didn't feel at ease; I was fighting with physics for quite a while, mathematics was already intense and I felt that I was in the wrong place.
After 2 years of intense battles with numbers and where I felt I was losing the war, fortunately I was advised by my family and they guided me to take a vocational test... as a result it showed that my inclinations and potential were directed to careers related to education or similar.
Changing careers at the Central University of Venezuela took time; someone today I do not remember who, told me about the Simon Rodriguez University, this university had branches in several cities and among them Los Teques, entering was fast and would be in the city itself; also an extra value that gave it for my situation, is that the university had an andragogic system, in which classes were in the afternoons and evenings, allowing students to work during the day and study at night.
This time I liked what I was studying, there was a lot to read, a lot to analyze, a lot to discover and I simply loved it, I did very well in each of my subjects and my thesis had an excellent grade and very good comments from my jury.
That is how I started this beautiful career, while I studied in the afternoons and evenings, I started working in the mornings, I started as a substitute in some public schools, since, in the university there were female teachers and well it was the perfect opportunity for beginners. My experience as a substitute for 1, 2 or 3 days was terrible haha, I arrived with no experience whatsoever, the kids perceived it perfectly and nothing to misbehave with the substitute. I used to come home crying because of the bad time I was having. Today I understand that this is quite normal.
Later I was offered a job but this time as a regular teacher in a very small private school, it was called "Jean Piaget" I only had 5 students in my classroom, there my fears of chaos dissipated, of
course I was not yet working with high enrollment classrooms (in Venezuela they range between 30 and 40 students per classroom) and I still did not know what that experience was like, I had to wait. There I was given a 5th grade classroom and I only lasted 1 year because the school closed due to low enrollment.
With the university contacts I found out that they were looking for teachers in a school in San Antonio de los Altos, it was called "Instituto Educacional San Antonio", there I put my papers and was accepted as a 3rd grade teacher, this became my second university, the university of praxis, where you learn that theory does not always match practice, There the coordinator was an older lady graduated from "Normalista" a very strict old school, from her I learned many strategies, activities, use of resources for learning, she was a great mentor, it was also a school with low enrollment, the maximum that a classroom could reach was 15 students, I was in that school for 6 years.
Then when I moved to Margarita I also began my steps in a wonderful private school, very demanding and definitely of excellence, it was called Andrés Bello, there the enrollment was high (the classrooms were 25 to 30 students) I was going to start in a classroom in the middle of the year, I started in March, because the assigned teacher had resigned, it was a very demanding school and not everyone could stand it.
I was very scared but excited, I had a lot of support from the principal and all the staff, in this school I matured as a teacher, I had falls that taught me and strengthened my school practice, I grew a lot as a teacher. At the end of my school year I had a good performance and I remember that the principal told me some words that I will never forget: New broom always sweeps well... and I made sure for the rest of my teaching career to always do excellent and never let my guard down.
After a few years I had the opportunity to enter a public school, I started as a computer teacher at the "Francisco Antolín del Campo" school, I taught from 3:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and I had the opportunity to teach at the "Francisco Antolín del Campo" school. I was teaching from 3:00pm to 8:00pm and basically I was attending to the community, my contact with the students was only from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Then I worked in the mornings at "Andres Bello" and in the afternoons at the public school.
Then I was transferred to a public school called "Dr. Luis Ortega" where I spent 2 years with the same schedule as in the previous one (from 3:00pm to 8:00pm), but in the 3rd year the director decided to move me to a classroom and I started working with classrooms of up to 37 students, at this point I had to resign from the private school. It is worth saying that my stay in this school was excellent, here I put into practice everything I learned in my previous schools and it gave me very good results, my performance was quite good. Dr. Luis Ortega" was my home for 11 years and there I left friends who I consider today a great family (I speak in the past tense because I left the classroom to become a principal and other experiences that I will tell you later).
Finally, the more time I spent in the classroom, the more I realized that I was where I wanted to be and how good I felt, the achievements and satisfactions that I experienced with my students were priceless, I enjoyed every day, I enjoyed being with my children and applying my knowledge so that they could develop in the best and most optimal way. I am one of those who believe in the pedagogy of love, I believe that I want my students to feel the way I felt with that 5th grade teacher who impacted me and whom I never forget and who planted in me the desire to be a teacher.
