My interest in the history of the pre-Christian people's of Europe, specifically the Vikings, in no secret so last year for my birthday a family member bought me a family pass to one of my favorite places on Earth... The Schleswig Viking Museum.
Yesterday, we realized that soon the living encampment area would be closing for the season so we loaded the kids up and drove out there to walk the 1km path down to the water to visit the reconstructed Viking village.
The grounds are filled with actual livestock with lots of trails and stations to explore. There is also plenty of areas to picnic and the outside area is dog-friendly!
There are two parts to the museum. The main part, which is located indoors and filled with artifacts and even a real Viking longship. The second part is an outdoor village with re-enactors and family-friendly activities.
Having Two-year-old twin girls and a 4-year-old boy (who loves playing with Viking artifacts) we knew our options were limited to visiting the village. Taking the whole gang in the museum would probably be frowned upon. Nevertheless it was An enjoyable experience taking the long walk in the sunny autumn weather.
When visiting the museum you can always count on a variety of European languages being heard spoken while you pass through the crowds of visitors. Yesterday my imagination was placing me back to the times when this was a real operational trade port and I was imagining all the languages one would have heard back then.
Who would enjoy this in their dining room? I know I would! Maybe next year for my birthday?
