Today I had an interesting discussion with one of my friends about which medication to take for health issues. She mentioned that she was already taking allopathic medicines for some of her health issues and she said that there is no harm in choosing a natural medicine and consuming natural medicine along with Allopathy medication. I said well it is subjective but to some extent it is okay. But the conversation then deviated today's saying that natural medicines will not have any side effects.

This is when the conversation got heated up and I had to explain her so many things. As per Ayurveda, even plants are exposed to doshas like how humans get doshas. In that case it is very important to choose the right medication and consume it as per the prescription. I don't understand why people automatically assume that none of the natural medicines will create any side effects. It is true that even herbs and ayurvedic medicines creates side effects if they are not consumed properly as per the prescription.

We shouldn't be going to the shops directly and purchase ayurvedic herbs and just blindly mix it with milk or water and consume it. The ideal way to take a medication is to first approach a proper medical practitioner and explain our problem and then take their advise to consume the medicines. If not consumed properly even natural medicine can create harmful effects. We should never take things for granted.

One thing that I have noticed so far is that if a natural medicine is consumed in proper quantity and as per the instructions given by a medical practitioner, it doesn't give any other side effects or creates any harm. Something like if we take a medicine for the heart, it affects the brain. That is not something that I have seen with Ayurveda or any natural medicine but i have seen that practically happening with Allopathic medication. My grandfather took allopathic medication for TB and ended up getting skin rashes. When consulted with doctor, he mentioned that it was side effect of TB medicine.

So, everyone should be very careful about their medication even if it is a natural medicine and shouldn't assume that it can never have side effects.
