Hello everyone

This post is the second part of an Adventure to AO LUEK to see something special so if you haven't seen the first part yet go and read it first to see the park outside of this amazing temple that is Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol and better understand why it is so special and unknown.

In this second part, I will take advantage of the visit to this incredible place to try to give you some knowledge on the way we practice Buddhism in Thailand and on the beliefs of Thai people.

As in my last post, before I begin, I have something to explain. This time it's the use of "Buddha image", which in Thailand refers to the representation of Buddha in 3 dimensions, something you would more likely call a statue I think.

Then, Let's Go for Episode 2! Welcome to Thailand!

img_20211218_141250.jpg

Let's start from where I left you in episode 1, in the main enclosure of the Wat Bang Thong temple in front of this amazing 70 meters high golden Chedi (pagoda).

Since I saw it with my own eyes, with this impressive size, I still can't realize that I heard about this place only a few days ago even though I've been living not too far from it.

img_20211218_142611.jpg

The surrounding area is decorated with a Thai Kanok pattern, when using Kanok and not Kranok it means golden. This pattern takes its inspiration from nature and Thai legends.

Each floor is decorated with Buddha images around the pagoda, and below is a giant statue holding the baton.

img_20211218_142644.jpg

This is a Yaksha, he is a giant demon guardian of the gates in Buddhist temples being mentioned in both religion and literature. It is a Thai belief that is influenced by Brahmanism and Buddhism.

The belief is that the giants have different levels according to merit, high giants will have golden castles, beautiful appearance, you usually do not see fangs. When they are angry, the fangs come out, most of the middle giants were descendants of higher giants. As for the lower-level giants of Boon Noi, they had a frightening shape, curly black hair, rough skin, and fierce habits.

We use also him as the representation of the letter ย from the Thai alphabet.

img_20211218_142721.jpg

We often find giants assembled as part of temples or ancient sites. According to legend, the Buddha preached and taught the giants to reduce their stubbornness.

The giant who listened and understood the Dharma became a pillar of Buddhism. In other words, he is the one who carries the heavens and acts as the protector of stupas and sacred buildings to support Buddhism so that it may prosper.

WOW! I walked in and was amazed at the beauty of the murals.

Personally, I think it is more beautiful to look at with the naked eye than through a lens, it is not easy to capture these beauties through the lens of a camera nor this so particular atmosphere that enrolls you. What do you think?

Inside the Chedi (pagoda), there is a large Buddha image in the center that stands out and is majestic. Buddha image in the posture of giving his first sermon The width of the lap is 3 meters.

As you can see, the Buddha image is looking at the entrance. If one day you want to put a Buddha image in your house you have some rules to respect:

  • Do not place it against the bathroom wall.
  • Do not place above the edge of the door or lean against a floating pole.
  • Do not have beams above the shelf of the Buddha image.
  • Do not have an amulet shelf in the bedroom.

img_3504.jpg

Buddha image, Phra Phuttha Metta, is made of white jade from Burma.

"Phra That" is like a representative of the Lord Buddha. Therefore, it can be seen that any place has relics enshrined. That relic will never decay because Buddhists help protect it.

img_3528.jpg

img_20211218_150320.jpg

Inside the Phra Mahathat is also decorated with beautiful mural paintings of the history of the Buddha that tell a story about the Buddha's history and decorated with sumptuous Thai pattern Kanok pattern.

img_3447.jpg

img_3432.jpg

If you look outside by the window, you will see the upper arch of the four-faced Brahma.

img_20211218_143317.jpg

When they arrive at the temple, good Buddhists should make merit (remember I explained in episode one the meaning of "make merit") by buying flowers, incense sticks, and candles to pay homage to the main Buddha image to preserve Buddhism forever.

img_20211218_143504.jpg

img_3395.jpg

I participated in merit-making with my youngest son, the offerings of relics with my family.

img_3408.jpg

img_20211218_145040.jpg

Each day some Buddhists come to make merit throughout the day. The monks who performed the ceremony had to pray and walk around the relics all day. It's hard work and it puts a strain on his voice to recite the songs very loudly.

img_3474.jpg

The cloth used to cover Phra That Phanom is usually yellow. Before the procession, the monks will offer their offerings and walk in front of the procession as an offering to the Lord Buddha.

img_20211218_144611.jpg

img_3483.jpg

The procession of the "Phra That Buddha Blanket" is considered a symbol of the offerings of relics that are sacred in Buddhism. It is believed that anyone who has the opportunity to offer blanket relics is considered to have made merit with the Buddha and the virtue of offering blankets to the relics is to create warmth. Peaceful is the happiness of the family.

img_20211218_144734.jpg

img_3543.jpg

Shortly after the relic offerings, there will be an officer to pick up the relic cloth, to fold it properly before placing it for the Buddhists who will come later to offer the relics. The cloth used will continue like this all day.

img_3553.jpg

After I the offerings of relics. It's time to fortune sticks. You probably remember how to shake sticks in a bamboo cylinder to read their fortunes (else you can take a look at my post Wat Chalong, the gem of Phuket).

img_20211218_150706.jpg

I got prophecy number 7, this is my second shake stick, the first time I got the number 10, the prophecy was not good then I decided to shake again until I get a good prophecy. 😜😜😜

img_3544.jpg

This is a prophecy board. Anyone can shake stick any number, use their phone to take a picture to read later to save paper, and does not create waste as well.

img_20211218_150805.jpg

This is my prophecy. After I shake the stick twice. 😜😜😜

img_20211218_151124.jpg

After spending a lot of time inside, I kept a few places outside that I want to show you too. But let's start by getting out of the main compound.

img_3839.jpg

img_3711.jpg

When we are in front of the temple, on the right, along with the main enclosure there are some wonders to admire.

Statue of Luang Pu Thuad (Pu meaning grandfather) of 9 meters width sitting on a king cobra. Endowed with a legendary power, he was able to transform seawater into drinking water, he was born in 1582 and died 100 years later. He is an extremely respected Buddhist monk who lived in Siam (former name of Thailand).

Here he is sitting on a snake relating an episode of his life. As a child, he was already known for his compassion and generous attitude, making merit regularly, but one day while he was in the garden, far from the sight of his parents, a huge snake approached and wound itself around the sleeping child. When his parents arrived they understood that it was a deity who came to pay respect for the merit made by their child.

The Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol temple is really impressive by its size and the gems it contains.

While doing the right side of the temple we didn't see anyone while there are so many things to see, I hope that you, when you will come to visit the temple you will go and have a look. 😉

img_3797.jpg

In addition to the development of permanent objects within the temple, the royal abbot has foreseen the importance of education of the Sangha, a Sanskrit word referring to Buddhist monasticism.

Therefore, the construction of the teaching building for the Dharma-Pali was built to be a place to study it for monks and novices of the temple who are interested in studying.

the Dharma-Pali is a Sanskrit word meaning the teachings of the Buddha by its fundamental principles. The Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.

img_3807.jpg

img_3809.jpg

I hope that the visit of this incredible place of which I would have tried to reproduce the beauty and the atmosphere in these 2 posts will have enjoyed you.

It is now time to take the road again and to reach our hotel a few kilometers away to rest before another surprising visit. 🤭
