Pets are amazing animals. They are great companions. They help reduce stress and make one feel calm. Some of them can even sense when one is happy or not. People keep different kinds of pets depending on one’s choice.
Rabbits and geese used to be my favorite pets. I once had a rabbit as a pet, but I also wanted to have geese. Geese are gregarious, flock animals, orderly, and lovely birds, which is why I adore them.
Although over the year, I have learned to love dogs and also wish I had one of my own. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is a dog.
A dog is the best and most dependable animal for a man. I would have replied I detest dogs if you had asked me earlier last year what I thought about having a dog as a pet.
However, the National Youth Service Corps last year helped me overcome my aversion to dogs. I stayed with my uncle throughout my National Youth Service Corps in Kano State, Nigeria, where I was posted.
He has a dog named Sony. From what my cousins told me, my uncle adopted Sony when she was a puppy and they have watched her grow up into a beautiful dog.
I never felt comfortable letting Sony be around me during my first two weeks at my uncle's house because I wasn't a dog person. I had no idea Sony would become a close pal.
One of the most intelligent, amiable, and playful dogs I've ever seen is Sony. She is intelligent in a way that makes someone like me want to own a dog as a pet.
The fact that Sony alerts one when somebody is at the gate is one of the cleverest things that ultimately led me to like her. She does approach the main entrance of the house and barks to let anyone inside know there is a knock or someone at the gate.
She does bark too when there is a stranger at the gate. I believe that's something every dog does, but she has a way of barking when the person at the gate is not a stranger, and she does that at the main entrance of the house and not the gate.
Second, when it gets dark and the chickens and ducks are still outside their pen, Sony helps herd them all inside and waits there until someone comes to close the pen.
Furthermore, Sony always kept an eye on the sheep in the farm yard to prevent them from coming out whenever the door to their pen was left open.
So it's always easy to know that the sheep pen is open whenever one can’t find Sony within the main compound.
All these attributes and more that Sony possesses have made me love this dog. Although I haven't yet relocated back to my state after I have completed National Youth Service Corps, Sony will undoubtedly be one of the things I will miss when I finally leave Kano or move out of my uncle's house.
Undoubtedly, Sony made me a dog person, and I adore her company. My affection for Sony has made me change my negative view of having dog as pet and made me want to get a dog of my own.
