Self-discipline is the capacity to regulate one's behaviour and actions in order to lead a successful life. For many people, self-discipline is not something that comes naturally. Few people possess it.
However, anyone can develop self-discipline if they are willing to acquire it. Though it is not something that can be developed overnight, it takes persistent effort and dedication.
Self-discipline involves being able to stay true to oneself and to make deliberate decisions. I discipline myself for things like going to bed and waking up early, being mindful of time, and being content with whatever I have. I am always appreciative of these things.
Another aspect of self-discipline is the capacity to avoid diversion and resist temptation. The ability to stay focused and resist temptation are two major threats that people face in today's environment.
I could recall when I was in school. I used to have a neighbour who was also a student like myself. He used to be an easygoing person and a devoted student until he started hanging out with some wealthy friends.
He became preoccupied with how luxuriously his new friends were living and began to yearn for their lifestyle.
He began spending a lot of time with them and imitating them. He occasionally starves himself just to live the big boy lifestyle, spending most of his monthly allowance on frivolous items.
He eventually began to perform poorly in school, but he did not care until the semester results were out and his CGPA dropped to probation with many carried over courses.
His workload at school increased, but he learned his lesson and realized he needed to improve his self-discipline.
Not having self-discipline has led many individuals astray. It has been demonstrated that having self-discipline leads to a variety of favourable life outcomes. In fact, self-discipline enables one to do what is right even when it is difficult.
In conclusion, self-discipline is a very valuable quality to possess. One can avoid a regretful life as well as enjoy a more fulfilling one when one is self-disciplined.
