Small things in Life

Yesterday, Saturday, I didn't have much to do, and it was a nice sunny day, so I took a break from sitting in front of my laptop, and went out to enjoy some 'small things in life'. I took the family to the Bayou City Art Festival. My wife and kids are very active on art. There are always paintings lying around the house, the good, the bad or the ugly! Everything is disorganized in our household, god know how I find anything important! Maybe there is nothing of importance in our house. Anyways, that's on the side and will probably require a separate post, but back to the Art Festival....

Its open air. Happens at the Memorial Park, which is a nice green corridor at the heart of Houston. It is an yearly event, and I always try and visit. However, last couple of years have been difficult, as with many similar things. But this year it came with a bang!

The Bayou City Art Festival is a beloved signature art event for the city of Houston. It is a fun and interactive outdoor art festival for people of all ages and is one of the top-ten ranked outdoor art festivals in the nation. The three-day festival features the works of 300 national and international artists, two live entertainment stages, a craft beer garden, the La Crema Experience Wine Tasting, a food truck park, an Art Bar, an Active Imagination Zone for kids of all ages, a VIP Hospitality Lounge, an interactive community art project, and more! The outdoor event offers visitors the opportunity to meet with exhibiting artists, view original works from 19 art disciplines, and purchase world-class art, prints, jewelry, sculptures, and more at prices for everyone.

First Piece

As you can see, it is rather a large gathering. We spend all morning and afternoon there. Until our legs started feeling like jello! I bought two paintings. The first by Lisa Telling Kattenbraker.

Painting by Lisa Telling Kattenbraker

Lisa lives in Olympia, WA in the Pacific North West, as part of the country I find amazing enchanting! I had a long conversation with Lisa, where she talked about how much she enjoys phases of moon and how she found them important to birth time for each of her family member. She explained how important the the family is to her life and how a common thread that binds all the family members, especially the women in her family!

Mothers, Sisters, Daughters: Original by Lisa Kattenbraker

My daughter loves this one. I especially enjoy the dark stick figures, feels like family to us. My daughter misses her gramdma, and she see's her in there. Lisa's art uses batik techniques, which originated from Java Indonesia, but widely popular all over the south east Asia. That is a art technique lot of my family is attached to as well (mostly in clothing though, not as painting). Therefore, Lisa's art seems like a perfect fit for our home. Below is a good interview and her original technique:

Second Piece

The next piece that we bought (actually its on order, as it was purchased already by the time we return's to Erin's place for the second time!), is The Snow Queen, by Erin Curry, but it is not the painting, is the a mixed media art in a Shadowbox that we ordered.

The Snow Queen, by Erin Curry

Erin is from Dallas, TX. She is a biolofist turned artist. My older daughter and Erin had a long conversation about the Snow Queen, which meant to represent the Greek goddess Athena. My daughther is heavily into greek mythology and she wanted to have this for her room. I think it fits perfectly and we are looking forward for the shadownbox to arrive at our home. Erin mentioned it will be customized as per my daugther's wishes which she obviously loves a lot.

And that's about it, it was a morning and afternoon well spend, and I look forward to do it again!
