The development of modern Indonesian painting, is inseparable from the colonial intervention that produces western art. Techniques, coloring, and the flow of European painting, especially the Dutch are much studied by the natives who get access to western education. Thus, in the beginning, modern painting in Indonesia originated from nobles who had greater rights than the commoners. One of the pioneers in the history of modern painting art in Indonesia is Raden Saleh. His various works of romanticism are very close to his experience of studying with western painters.
