What are the odds of getting struck by lightning?
According to research, the odds of someone getting struck by lightning is 1 in 3000. According to statistics, between 40 to 50 people die due to being struck by lightning just in the US alone. In South Africa, in my area where I stay, people getting struck by lightning is a serious and common situation.
Being stuck by lightning is very dangerous. If it does not cause the person to die, it could cause other serious harm. It also may cause cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is unexpected unconsciousness, loss of breath and heart function. The injury that it may cause is severe. They include possible brain damage, terrible burns, memory loss or even a change of personality.
How can you prevent getting struck by lightning?
As soon as you hear thunder approach, stay away from electronic devices such as phones, laptops, computers etc. Make sure to stay indoors. Don’t lean against concrete walls. If you happen to be outdoors and have no access to shelter, avoid standing near a tree. DO NOT USE A TREE FOR SHELTER. Stay away from electrical poles, windmills, etc. Do not lay flat on the ground.
